Swimming & Diving Opens Season with Spartan Relay Meet

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2019-20 season by hosting Baldwin Wallace University for the Spartan Relay Meet on Friday night. In the unique format, only relay teams competed, with no team scoring at the meet.

The meet started with a victory by the 3x100 women's butterfly team of sophomore Anna Smith and freshmen Laila Michel and Erica Yang with a time of 3:06.10. With a time of 3:07.24, junior Caitlyn VonFeldt, sophomore Jackie Ngu, and freshman Johanna Pearson won the 3x100 backstroke event. In the 3x100 breaststroke relay, sophomore Kelly Moton, junior Caroline Dudenhoeffer, and freshman Elizabeth McDyer teamed up to take the title with a mark of 3:35.91. Freshman Abby Halsdorfer, sophomore Sarah Krueger, senior Olivia Picchione, and freshman Maria Pritchett won the 4x800 freestyle event, finishing with a time of 8:02.60. Picchione, Prichett, Krueger, and VonFeldt combined to win the 500-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 4:49.64.

Smith, Moton, Michel, and Halsdorfer combined to win the 400 medley relay, finishing with a time of 4:11.28. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Yang and McDyer teamed up with senior Rhiannon Reese and sophomore Emili Toppari to earn a win at a mark of 1:45.77. Adding a win in the 400-yard individual medley relay were Reese, Picchione, and seniors Sarah Taekman and Julia Ver Voort at a mark of 4:19.49. Finishing the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:44.68 and adding a win were Halsdorfer, VonFeldt, Krueger and Prichett.

On the men's side, freshman Anatole Borisov, junior Jakob Woerner, and sophomore Michael Clough won the 3x100 fly event with a time of 2:40.71. Junior Will McDonald, freshman Connor Chignell, and sophomore Nicholas Schoenig teamed up to win the 3x100 backstroke event, finishing the swim at 2:42.73. In the 3x100 breaststroke event, freshmen Will Bryant, Patrick Cavanaugh, and Yoochan Lee finished first with a time of 3:07.72. Finishing with a time of 7:22.27, freshman Andrew Smith, junior Sean Twomey, and sophomores Ryan Gilbert and Neil Wible won the 4x800 free event.

In the 500-yard freestyle relay, Wible, Schoenig, Smith, and sophomore Calvin Tecson teamed up to victory with a time of 4:20.72. Adding to their wins, the team of Clough, Cavanaugh, Woerner, and Twomey finished the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:39.95. Bryant and Gilbert combined with juniors Dakota Weinman and Chris Lemley to win the 200-yard freestyle event, finishing the race at 1:30.26. Twomey, Cavanaugh, Clough, and McDonald won the 400-yard individual medley relay with a time of 3:48.32. Finishing the meet were Smith, Borisov, Tecson, and Wible in the 400-yard freestyle relay, winning the event with a time of 3:15.64.

The Spartans return to the pool with a dual meet at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, October 26 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
