Case Western University junior Suhan Mestha and freshman Caitlyn VonFeldt each recorded NCAA 'B' cut times in the 100-yard backstroke, while Mestha's time set a new school record in the event. In addition, the women's 200-yard medley relay team of junior Alli Drohosky, Mestha, sophomore Monica Khare and VonFeldt broke the school record in the event during the second day of competition at the Wooster Invitational, as both the men's and women's squads sit in first place at the meet.
The women have scored 1,273.5 points through the two days to lead second-place Gannon (849) and third place Wooster (786). The men have totaled 1,230 points to lead second-place Westminster (845.5) and third-place Gannon (787). A total of 11 women's teams and nine men's teams are in action at the meet.
Mestha paced the squad in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the event with a 'B' cut time and new school record time of 56.24. It was her second 'B' cut of the meet. Her time bested the previous school record of 56.99 set by Mestha in 2016 at the UAA Championships. VonFeldt finished right behind Mestha with a 'B' cut time of 56.42, while junior Bhavya Kumaran placed sixth with a time of 1:00.07.
The women's 200-yard medley relay team won the event with a school-record time of 1:46.06. It bested the previous school record of 1:47.45 set back in 2012. In addition, the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Mestha, sophomore Vanya Ruppart, sophomore Olivia Picchione and junior Kelsey Holmberg finished first in the event with a time of 7:49.62.
The Spartan women were also particularly strong in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing with four 'A' final finishers. The 400-yard IM 'A' final finishers were Olivia Picchione (third, 4:45.29), sophomore Sarah Taekman (fifth, 4:49.99), sophomore Aleah Hixenbaugh (sixth, 4:49.26 in the prelim) and sophomore Julia Ver Voort (seventh, 4:48.25 in the prelim).
Other 'A' final finishers for the Spartan women on Friday included Khare (fifth, 59.09 in the prelim) and senior Inez Moore (sixth, 59.88) in the 100-yard butterfly, Ruppart (third, 1:55.88) in the 200-yard freestyle) and sophomore Alexa Simoneau (fifth, 1:07.80) and Drohosky (seventh, 1:07.54 in the prelim) in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Senior Brooke Hortness finished third in the women's one-meter dive with a score of 342.95.
The Spartan men were particularly strong in both 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with five 'A' final finishers in the 400-yard IM and three 'A' final finishers in the 100-yard breast. The 400-yard IM 'A' final finishers were senior Drew Hamilton (first, 4:05.98), freshman Sean Twomey (third, 4:08.60), junior Keith Erichsen (fifth, 4:11.94 in the prelim), sophomore A.J. Quinn (sixth, 4:13.61) and senior Aaron Pang (seventh, 4:12.79 in the prelim). The 100-yard breast 'A' final finishers were freshman Darren Lau (first, 58.46 in the prelim), senior John Kilbane (third, 59.02) and senior Evan Rose (fifth, 59.19 in the prelim).
Other 'A' final finishers for the Spartan men on Friday included senior Oliver Hudgins (first, 50.49) in the 100-yard butterfly, junior Brody Schmidt (sixth, 1:44.14) in the 200-yard freestyle and freshman Dakota Weinman (eighth, 53.40) in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Spartan men's 200-yard medley relay of Hamilton, Hudgins, Lau and Pang added a third-place finish with a time of 1:34.82, while the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Hamilton, Hudgins, Schmidt and Twomey finished second in the event with a time of 6:53.88.
Freshman Cassiel Yuzik finished third in the men's three-meter dive with a score of 361.80
Action at the Wooster Invitational will conclude on Saturday, with the preliminaries starting at 10:00 a.m., and finals at 5:00 p.m.
