The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams will kick off their 2017-18 campaign this weekend, when the Spartans welcome John Carroll University to the Veale Natatorium on Saturday, October 21st for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
The Spartan men earned two All-America honorable mention finishes at the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships in Shenandoah, Texas, with senior Drew Hamilton recording both All-America honorable mention finishes. Hamilton finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:30.51, and ninth in the 400-yard individual medley in a school-record time of 3:57.85. Hamilton has collected five All-American certificates in his career.
The Spartans' success at the NCAA Championships, followed a number of standout performances at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Senior Oliver Hudgins placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.68 and also broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke en route to placing second in the event with a time of 1:48.79. That time bested his previous school record of 1:50.00 set at the 2016 UAA Championships. In addition, the Spartans 800-yard freestyle relay of Hamilton, Hudgins, recent graduate Andrew Henning and junior Brody Schmidt finished second in the event with a time of 6:45.24.
Hamilton, Hudgins and Schmidt are all scheduled to return to lead the Spartans this season. Hamilton will be looking to improve on his school record times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.84), 500-yard freestyle (4:28.98), 1,000-yard freestyle (9:30.02), 1,650-yard freestyle (15:54.06) and 400-yard individual medley (3:57.85), while Hudgins will be looking to better his school records in the 100-yard backstroke (51.40) and 200-yard backstroke (1:48.79). Schmidt set career-best times in the in 200-yard freestyle (1:43.38) and in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.77) during his sophomore campaign.
Other returners for the Spartans who will begin the season with a top-10 times in school history include senior Aaron Pang (ninth in the 100 Fly, 51.23; fifth in the 200 Fly, 1:53.05; fifth in the 400 IM, 4:06.63; seventh in the 200 IM, 1:55.98), junior Keith Erichsen (third in the 1650 Free, 16:00.83; sixth in the 500 Free, 4:38.65; eighth in the 400 IM, 4:10.03), senior David Merriman (seventh in the 1650 Free, 16:10.60), senior Logan Smith (sixth in the 200 Fly, 1:53.42), senior Dominic Kizek (seventh in the 200 Fly, 1:53.61), senior Evan Rose (seventh in the 200 Breast, 2:08.15), and sophomore Tom Schlechter (ninth in the 400 IM, 4:10.61).
Merriman, Smith and senior John Tomko are slated to serve as captains of the men's squad during the 2017-18 campaign.
The CWRU women finished the 2016-17 season with an 8-2 dual meet record, and claimed seventh at the 2017 UAA Championships.
Senior captain Jennifer Eurich will return to lead the Spartans in the water, entering the season with top-10 times in school history in the 50 Free (fourth, 24.26) and in the 100 Free (seventh, 53.41). Senior Inez Moore will also return to serve as captain for CWRU, she will enter the season with top-10 times in the 50 Free (fifth, 24.41), 100 Free (10th, 53.57) and 100 Fly (eighth, 59.50). In addition, the team's top diver from 2016-17, senior captain Brooke Hortness, is slated to be back in action for the squad.
Other CWRU women returning to the squad this season with top-10 times in the programs record book include junior Suhan Mestha (first in the 100 Back, 56.99; first in the 200 Back, 2:03.49; second in the 50 Free, 23.96; second in the 100 Free, 52.02; third in the 200 IM, 2:07.36; sixth in the 200 Free, 1:55.52), senior Mary Katherine Miller (first in the 200 IM, 2:07.31; first in the 400 IM, 4:30.59; second in the 200 Fly, 2:06.64; ninth in the 200 free. 1:56.26), junior Casey Crowley (fourth in the 100 Fly, 58.42; sixth in the 200 Fly, 2:09.76), junior Bhavya Kumaran (third in the 100 Back, 58.95; third in the 200 Back, 2:08.24), sophomore Sarah Taekman (fifth in the 100 Breast, 1:07.55; third in the 200 Breast, 2:25.90; eighth in the 400 IM, 4:40.71), junior Alexa Simoneau (eighth in the 100 Breast, 1:08.46; ninth in the 200 Breast, 2:28.29), sophomore Julia Ver Voort (fifth in the 200 IM, 2:19.92; 10th in the 400 IM, 4:42.85), junior Madeleine Farnham (ninth in the 100 Fly, 59.63; seventh in the 200 Fly (2:11.29), sophomore Monica Khare (fifth in the 100 Fly, 59.22), junior Alli Drohosky (sixth in the 100 Breast, 1:08.34), sophomore Elizabeth Ye (sixth in the 200 Breast, 2:27.05) and sophomore Becca Segel (10th in the 200 Fly, 2:13.05.
The Spartans will open their campaign against John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, October 21st at 1:00 p.m. Last season, the CWRU women claimed a 142-101 win over the Blue Streaks, but the men fell 126-115.
Saturday's season-opener will be the first of nine dual meets on the Spartans 2017-18 schedule.
Other key meets for the team include the Wooster Invitational from November 30th- December 2nd and the UAA Championships from February 14th-17th at Emory University. The NCAA Diving Zone Meet is scheduled for March 2nd-3rd, with qualifying swimmers and divers moving on to the NCAA Division III Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana from March 21st-24th.
