Men’s Soccer Stunned on Late Goal against Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team fell to the University of Rochester 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field. The Yellowjackets (8-5-0, 1-3-0 University Athletic Association) scored with just one second remaining in regulation on a corner kick to stun the Spartans (5-5-4, 0-2-2 UAA).

The match was scoreless after a defensive first half, which saw just one shot on goal from both teams in the entire period.

Early in the second half, the Spartans fired off three shots in quick succession and earned a corner kick. Rochester defenders blocked the first two shots and the third, from sophomore midfielder Peter Dernelle, was saved. A few minutes later, first-year goalkeeper Jackson Kallen and the CWRU defense stopped a barrage of Rochester shots to keep the match scoreless.

The Spartans outshot the Yellowjackets 12-11 in the match. Senior forward Zachary Senft led the team with four shots and one on goal. Dernelle added three shots as well.

Case Western Reserve will look to rebound when the team faces Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania on Monday, October 28 in their final non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Case Western Reserve's next home match will be Senior Day against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, November 9.
