The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 non-conference battle against the Marietta College Pioneers on Wednesday evening at Marietta Field in Marietta, Ohio.
CWRU is 4-3-2 overall, while Marietta advances to 4-4-0
The Spartans and Pioneers battled to a scoreless first half, as Marietta held the 11-5 advantage in shots throughout the period.
In the second half, the Spartans were first to find the back of the net. At the 55:08 mark, sophomore midfielder Sean Atwater crossed a ball into the six-yard box and junior forward Seldon Magruder was able to head the ball into the back of the net. The score was Magruder's third of the season, while the assist was Atwater's first of the campaign.
The Pioneers tied the game at the 77:23 mark when Robert Phillips received a cross from Caden Ferguson and scored the ball for his second goal of the season. Marietta would then score with 55 seconds remaining in the second half and hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
CWRU outshot the Pioneers in the second half, 13-5. Magruder led the Spartans in the game with five total shots, including four goal.
In net, freshman Jackson Kallen went the distance and made four saves throughout the match. He dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will now travel home and prepare to welcome Otterbein University to DiSanto Field on Saturday, September 28th. Action is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
