CWRU Men’s Soccer to Host #4 John Carroll; Play at Adrian

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will enter the fourth week of its 2019 campaign with a non-conference match at home, and then hit the road for non-conference match in Adrian, Michigan.

On Wednesday, September 18th, the Spartans will welcome fourth-ranked John Carroll University to DiSanto Field for a 7:30 p.m. match. Following that, CWRU will head to Adrian, Michigan to face Adrian College on Saturday, September 21st at 7:30 p.m.

CWRU Spartans (3-1-2)

Senior midfielder Garrett Winter connected on a goal late in the second half on Wednesday evening to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Geneva College. Winter's game-winning goal broke a scoreless tie at the 89:57 mark. CWRU took a corner kick with roughly 20 seconds left in regulation and the ball was bounced around in the box before Winter gathered it and deposited it into the net from about eight yards out. The score was Winter's first of the season and 12th of his career.

On Saturday, the Spartans battled to 0-0 tie in double-overtime on the road versus Ohio Wesleyan University. Sophomore Charlie Fink made four saves in goal, while senior Zachary Senft recorded a team-high three shots.

#4 John Carroll Blue Streaks (6-0-0)

The Blue Streaks played a tough defensive game on Saturday night as they defeated Denison University 1-0. Jared Ianiro scored the lone goal for John Carroll, while the defense held a Denison team that was averaging 13 shots per game to just five.

Last year, the Spartans and Blue Streaks played a hard-fought game as CWRU came away with a 2-1 overtime victory. Junior Seldon Magruder scored the game-winning 'golden goal' just over two minutes into overtime to secure the 2-1 come-from-behind win. Sophomore Peter Dernelle accounted for the other Spartan goal during the game.

Adrian College Bulldogs (5-0-0)

The Bulldogs went 2-0 this past week, with the wins coming against Heidelberg on Wednesday and Mich.-Dearborn on Saturday. Adrian is now on a five-game win streak which is the first time in program history that the Bulldogs have done so. The Bulldogs have been led this year by freshman Dylan Wismont who leads the team with seven points on three goals and one assist.

Adrian will host Rochester (Mich.) University on Wednesday, before welcoming the Spartans to Docking Stadium on Saturday.

Last season, the Spartans erupted for an 8-1 win over the Bulldogs at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Senior Zachary Senft, junior Connor Weber and junior Seldon Magruder each accounted for a goal during the game.

Senior Zachary Senft currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association players with 26 shots, while junior Connor Weber ranks tied for second with two assists…Sophomore Charlie Fink ranks second in the UAA in saves (25), save percentage (.875), goals against (3) and goals-against average (0.46)…The Spartans have totaled 97 shots and 36 shots on goal through its first six games of the season...CWRU has held its opponents to averages of just 4.0 shots on goal per game, and 13.2 shots per contest.
