Case Western Reserve University senior midfielder Garrett Winter connected on a goal late in the second half on Wednesday evening to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.
The Spartans improved to 3-1-1 overall, while the Golden Tornadoes dropped to 2-3-0 on the season.
Winter's game-winning goal broke a scoreless tie at the 89:57 mark. CWRU took a corner kick with roughly 20 seconds left in regulation and the ball was bounced around in the box before Winter gathered it and deposited it into the net from about eight yards out. The score was Winter's first of the season and 12th of his career.
Besides the one goal, defenses ruled the game on Wednesday. CWRU sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Fink recorded four saves in the contest, improving to 3-1-1 on the campaign and registering his fifth individual shutout.
Despite Geneva holding the advantage in shots (15-12) and corner kicks (4-3), the Spartans held the advantage in shots on goal (6-4). Winter led the squad with four shots, including three on goal, while senior forward Zachary Senft tallied three shots.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action this weekend, when the team travels to Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, September 14th to face Ohio Wesleyan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
