Seventh-Ranked Men’s Soccer Hits the Road to Play at Geneva and Ohio Wesleyan

The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will hit the road for two non-conference games this week, as the Spartans will travel to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 11th to play Geneva College at 7:30 p.m., and then head to Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, September 14th to face Ohio Wesleyan University for a 7:00 p.m. match.

#7 CWRU Spartans (2-1-1)

The Spartans dropped a road match on Friday, as Capital University defeated CWRU 1-0 in overtime. The Crusaders scored the lone goal of the match in the 92nd minute. Senior forward Zachary Senft led the Spartans with four shots during the game, including one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Fink made five throughout the match.

On Sunday evening, freshman Matt Vatne scored his first collegiate goal to give the Spartans a 2-1 overtime victory over the College of Wooster. Vatne recovered a deflected cross and beat the Wooster keeper at the 93:48 mark to end the match in dramatic fashion. CWRU was able to even the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute of play when freshman Rafael Perez headed the ball into the goal for his second score of the season. Juniors Connor Weber and Nathan Ekberg were credited with an assist on the play.

Geneva Tornadoes (2-2-0)

The Tornadoes went 2-0 this past week with wins against Franciscan University and Wittenberg University. Against Franciscan, senior Jake Broadwick and sophomore Alex Yoder each scored a goal to give the Tornadoes their first victory of the 2019 season.

On Saturday against Wittenberg, Geneva scored the lone goal of the match in the 51st minute when senior James Mincone headed in a corner off the foot of freshman Noah Abdel-Nabi.

Last season, the Spartans defeated the Tornadoes 4-3 in a thrilling double overtime game. Senior Garrett Winter scored a pair of goals, including the game-winning 'golden goal' with 2:05 remaining in the second and final overtime period.

Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops (3-1-0)

The Battling Bishops went 2-0 this past weekend with wins against Wheaton College (Ill.) Colorado College. Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wheaton 2-0 on Friday with goals from seniors Joe Brush and Ryan Huelsman. The Battling Bishops then made a quick turnaround and earned a 4-1 victory against Colorado College on Saturday.

Ohio Wesleyan will play at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, before they return home to host the Spartans on Saturday evening.

The Spartans and Bishops last met during the 2017 season, as Ohio Wesleyan claimed a 1-0 victory.
