#7 CWRU Men Drop Overtime Match at Capital

The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a road match against the Capital University Crusaders in overtime, 1-0, on Friday evening at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The drop brings the Spartans to 1-1-1 overall, while the Crusaders improve to 3-0-0 on the campaign.

The Crusaders held the majority of chances in the first half, outshooting the Spartans 9-3 in the opening period. However, the defenses would win out over the first 45 minutes, with the teams heading into the break knotted in a scoreless tie.

CWRU defense limited the Capital chances in the second half, as the two teams each totaled five shots during the period. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game remained scoreless through regulation.

In the 92nd minute of the first overtime period, Capital's Sam Spirk scored the game-winner off an assist from Matt Scheper.

For the match, the Crusaders led in shots (15-8) and corner kicks (8-4).

Senior forward Zachary Senft led the Spartans with four shots, including one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Fink made five saves throughout the game and dropped to 1-1-1 on the season with the loss.

Case Western Reserve will return to action on Sunday, September 8th against the College of Wooster. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
