A hard-fought game by the seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team resulted in a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the University of Mount Union on Monday afternoon at DiSanto Field.
With the draw, the Spartans and the Purple Raiders both have 1-0-1 records this season.
About a half hour into the game, Mount Union scored first to break the scoreless tie with a goal on a free kick.
Case Western Reserve's aggressive second half attack eventually led to an equalizer in the 61st minute. Junior Connor Weber laced a corner kick from the right side of the field and freshman Rafael Perez headed the ball into the net for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Earlier in the half, the Spartans had a chance to score when senior Garrett Winter hit the top crossbar on a shot from the top of the box. Winter collected a deflection but failed to convert the opportunity.
The Spartans defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Fink (1 save) and senior Brian Woo, held up in the second half and both overtime periods, keeping the Purple Raiders off the board.
Case Western Reserve had chances to net a game-winning goal in the second half and both of the overtime periods, but could not get the ball past the Mount Union goalkeeper.
Junior Seldon Magruder led the Spartans with four total shots, including two shots on goal. As a team, Case Western Reserve outshot Mount Union 15-9 and placed seven on goal to the Purple Raiders' two.
The Spartans will next travel to Columbus, Ohio to face Capital University on Friday, September 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
