#7 CWRU Men’s Soccer to Open Season with Heidelberg, Mount Union

The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will open the 2019 campaign with a pair of home matchups against Heidelberg University on Friday, August 30th and against the University of Mount Union on Monday, September 2nd at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio. The Spartans are scheduled to start Friday's match at 7:30 PM and Monday's match at 1:00 PM.

#7 CWRU Spartans

The Spartans will open their 2019 season on Friday, following a 16-4-2 finish and the first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in the 2018 campaign. CWRU is slated to return 22 players from last year's team, including nine with significant starting experience.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Brandon Bianco who is starting his seventh season with the team. He has notched a career-record of 55-39-17 for a .585 winning percentage, while mentoring 27 players to All-UAA honors during his tenure as head coach of the team, including six during the 2018 campaign. Bianco is assisted by Chris Black, Charlie Reymann and Joseph Salem.

Heidelberg Student Princes

After a 6-8-2 record last season, Heidelberg will be opening its 2019 campaign against the Spartans on Friday. The Student Princes finished eighth in the Ohio Athletic Conference last season.

Heidelberg is led by fourth-year head coach Pat Svihlik. He is assisted by Steven Smith and Zach Fowler.

Last season, the Spartans' defeated the Student Princes 4-0 on September 19, as three different Spartans scored a goal during the game. Senior Garrett Winter registered a pair of goals, while senior Zachary Senft and junior Seldon Magruder each accounted for one goal apiece.

Mount Union Purple Raiders

Mount Union finished the 2018 year with a 13-4-1 record, including a 5-3-1 mark in conference play, while scoring 1.72 goals-per game. The Purple Raiders are coached by Carter Poe, who is starting his fifth year with the team. He is assisted by Joe Chmura.

This is the fifth meeting between the two teams during the Brandon Bianco era of CWRU soccer. Last year, the Spartans fell to Mount Union 1-0, after the Purple Raiders scored a goal on a penalty kick in the 38th minute of the game.

The Spartans have won six of their last eight season-opening games, dating back to the 2011 season…Last season, CWRU defeated Marietta 3-0 in their season-opener in Cleveland, Ohio…D3Soccer.com All-America Third and First-Team All-UAA senior forward Zachary Senft returns this season after leading the team last season with with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists…Senior midfielder Garrett Winter, junior defender Nathan Ekberg and sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Fink return after earning All-UAA selections last season…Ekberg and Fink led the Spartans defensively as they aided the team to seven shutouts during the year, while Winter ranked second on the team with 24 points on nine goals and six assists.
