No. 8 Men’s Soccer to Close Regular Season at No. 23 Carnegie Mellon

The eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will conclude the 2018 regular season this weekend, as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, November 3rd at 1:00 p.m.

#8 CWRU Spartans (14-2-1, 4-1-1 UAA)

Senior Alex Besl connected on a header off a free kick by sophomore Connor Weber just over three minutes into the first overtime period on Friday to give the Spartans a 3-2 victory over the ninth-ranked University of Rochester. Junior Garrett Winter and sophomore Nathan Ekberg accounted for the other Spartan goals, both occurring in the first half on Friday evening.

CWRU had three different players score a goal as the Spartans won in a 3-0 shutout against Emory University on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia. Besl, junior Zachary Senft and Weber each scored a goal, while freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink went the distance and improved to 14-2-1 individually.

#23 Carnegie Mellon Tartans (10-4-2, 2-4-0 UAA)

The Tartans used two second half goals to earn a shutout victory at Emory University on Friday. Junior Elliot Cohen broke the scoreless game in the 70th minute when converted a penalty kick for his seventh score of the year. Junior Jack Painter added to the CMU lead in the 77th minute with his third goal of the season.

Carnegie Mellon played at Rochester on Sunday, with the Tartans falling 3-1. CMU opened the scoring when junior Nicholas Poveda headed in a shot during the seventh minute. However, the Yellowjackets would use three unanswered goals to secure the home victory.

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team currently sits in second place in the UAA standings...If the Spartans (4-1-1 UAA) win on Saturday and the University of Chicago (5-1-0 UAA) eithers ties or loses to Washington University (Mo.), then CWRU would claim the 2018 conference title...The Spartans hold the tiebreaker over Chicago after defeating them, 2-1, on Sunday, October 14th…Senior Alex Besl and junior Garrett Winter currently ranked tied for fourth among all University Athletic Association players with eight goals, while junior Zachary Senft ranks tied for first in assists (7) and fourth in points (21)…Freshman Charlie Fink ranks second in the UAA with 52 saves and fourth with a .800 save percentage…CWRU has totaled 281 shots and 134 shots on goal this season…The Spartans have held opponents to 4.2 shots on goal per game, and 10.8 shots per contest.
