Senior forward Alex Besl of the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team has been named the University Athletic Association men's soccer offensive athlete of the week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Besl led the Spartans to three wins in as many games this past week, as he scored two goals and registered one assist for five points. In Monday's 3-1 win over Westminster (Pa.), Besl assisted on the first goal of the game as he sent a pass into the box that was redirected into the goal by junior Marques Manta. Over the weekend, Besl scored the game-winning goal in each match. On Friday, he connected on a header just over three minutes into the first overtime period to give CWRU a 3-2 overtime victory over the ninth-ranked University of Rochester. Besl followed that performance on Sunday by scoring the game-winner in a 3-0 shutout victory over Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
For the season, Besl ranks tied for first on the team with eight goals and ranks tied for second with 19 points. In addition, he currently ranks tied for fourth among all University Athletic Association players in goals and tied for fifth in points. This was Besl's first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.
Case Western Reserve University will wrap-up their 2018 regular season schedule next weekend, when the team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, November 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
