Quick Start Lifts No. 11 CWRU Men’s Soccer to 3-1 Win over Westminster

The 11th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team struck for two goals in the first 10 minutes, en route to a 3-1 win over Westminster College in the Spartans' regular-season home finale at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday night.

The win was the third-straight for the Spartans, who improved to 12-2-1 overall, while ending their home slate with a 10-1-0 overall mark, and their non-conference schedule with a 10-1-0 record.  The Westminster loss ended a four-match winning streak for the Titans, who fell to 11-4-0 overall.

Facing a Westminster defense that had yielded just 11 goals all season, the Spartans wasted little time taking a lead.  CWRU struck just 23 seconds into the game, as senior forward Alex Besl was sprung on a run down the near sideline on a pass from junior midfielder Garrett Winter.  Besl drove to the end line before sending a pass into the six-yard box that was redirected into the goal by junior midfielder Marques Manta with 44:37 remaining in the opening half.  It was Manta's second goal of the season, while Besl secured his third assist of the year.

A long free kick in the 10th minute of the game helped the Spartans extend their lead to 2-0 nine minutes and 43 seconds into the game.  Sophomore midfielder Connor Weber took the free kick from 56 yards out, sending it into the six-yard box, where sophomore defender Nathan Ekberg headed it in for his third goal of the campaign.  Weber picked up his fourth assist of the year on Ekberg's goal.

Case Western Reserve continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting the Titans 11-3 during the first 45 minutes, including 5-1 advantages in both shots on goal and corner kicks, and carried the 2-0 lead into the break.  CWRU increased its lead to 3-0 with 38:32 remaining in the game on Zachary Senft's sixth goal of the campaign.  The Westminster defense cleared a ball out of the six yard box, but directly to Senft, who launched a low shot from 15 yards out that ricocheted off a defender and past the keeper for the goal.

Westminster got on the board in the 69th minute on Nick Iregui's 15th goal of the year with an assist by Shane Fallen.  However, the Spartans defense was able to hold the Titans scoreless over the final 20 minutes of the game to secure the victory.

CWRU finished the game with a 22-13 advantage in total shots, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.  Senft took a team-leading seven shots, including three on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink played all 90 minutes in the net, making six saves in the game and improving to 12-2-1.

The Spartans will now turn their attention towards three-game conference road swing to conclude their 2018 regular season.  Case Western Reserve will begin the stretch against the ninth-ranked University of Rochester at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 26th in Rochester, New York.
