Case Western Reserve University senior forward Alex Besl connected on a goal in the first half on Friday evening to give the 19th-ranked Spartans a 1-0 win over 23rd-ranked Washington (Mo.) University.
The Spartans improve to 10-2-1 overall, and 1-1-1 in the University Athletic Association. The Bears drop to 5-5-1 on the season, and 1-1-1 in the UAA.
The game was scoreless until the 27th minute of play, when Besl recovered the ball after junior forward Zachary Senft laced a shot that hit the post and then Besl struck the ball into the back of the net for the score. The goal was Besl's sixth of the season, and Senft was credited with the assist.
The Spartans withstood the Washington attack throughout the game. CWRU was led by the outstanding play of freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink who recorded three saves.
Even though the Bears totaled 11 shots in the game, the CWRU defense only allowed three of those shots on goal.
Case Western Reserve will continue its home stand on Sunday morning when the Spartans play against the top-ranked University of Chicago at DiSanto Field. The match is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
