Magruder Strikes Twice in 3-1 CWRU Win over Hiram

Case Western Reserve University sophomore forward Seldon Magruder recorded two goals in the first half to pace the squad to a 3-1 win over Hiram College at DiSanto Field on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 9-1-1 overall this season. Hiram dropped to 0-9-1 with the loss.

Sophomore forward Maximillian Klemm started the scoring early for the Spartans, striking at the 11:35 mark of the game. Sophomore midfielder Connor Weber sent a pass to into the middle of the box that Klemm was able to launch into the net for the score. The goal was Klemm's fourth of the season.

CWRU remained on top at 1-0 until the 15:01 mark when Magruder received a pass from Weber in the middle of the box and struck the ball into the top right of the goal.

Magruder then came back a little over three minutes later and laced a shot from approximately 25 yards out that snuck underneath the goalkeeper's hands. The score was his second of the game and sixth of the campaign.

The game stayed 3-0 for the remainder of the first half. After some back and forth play in the second half, the Terriers got on the board in the 80th minute after a goal from Brendan Niggemeyer. That was all the Spartans would allow as they would hang on for the 3-1 victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink registered 80 minutes of action, as he allowed zero goals and made three saves. He improved to 9-1-1 on the season. Sophomore Andrew Engelmeyer played the final 10 minutes of the game, allowing one goal and making two saves.

The Spartans outshot the Terriers 25-12, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. CWRU also held the advantage in corner kicks, 12-3.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action when they welcome University Athletic Association rival New York University to DiSanto Field on Saturday, October 6th. Game time is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
