Senior forward Alex Besl recorded his first career hat trick as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team erupted for an 8-1 win over Adrian College on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field.
The 8-1 win is the largest margin of victory for the Spartans since CWRU defeated Brooklyn College 10-0 on September 9th, 2017.
The Spartans improved to 7-1-0 on the season, while Adrian dropped to 3-4-0 for the 2018 campaign.
Besl opened the scoring in the first half, beginning in the 17th minute of play when he beat out the Adrian goalkeeper and defender to tap in the goal, his second of the season.
Less than a minute later, junior forward Zachary Senft received a pass from junior midfielder Marques Manta and launched a shot from approximately 20 yards out. The goal was Senft's fourth of the season.
The Bulldogs would score a goal in the 26th minute as the Spartans would take a 2-1 lead into halftime. After the intermission, CWRU wasted no time in extending their lead as Manta recorded his first goal of the season at the 45:19 mark.
Just over two minutes later at the 47:23 mark, Besl would score his second goal of the game after he received the ball after a shot from Senft and tipped ball into the back of the net.
CWRU would increase its lead to 5-1 in the 49th minute when sophomore midfielder Connor Weber received a cross from Manta and laced a shot into the lower left side of the goal. The goal was Weber's first of the 2018 campaign.
The Spartans would score two goals in the 56th minute of play. The first came at the 56:18 mark when Besl completed the hat trick after he dribbled down the left side of the field and struck a shot into the lower right corner of the goal. Besl now has four goals on the season.
The second goal in the 56th minute came less than 25 seconds later when sophomore forward Seldon Magruder received a perfect cross from freshman midfielder Peter Dernelle and headed the ball past the Adrian keeper. The score was Magruder's fourth of the season.
CWRU capped off its scoring in the 75th minute when sophomore midfielder Maximillian Klemm scored his third goal of the season, via assists from freshman forward Jacob Hall and senior midfielder Josh Wargo.
In net, freshman Charlie Fink played a little over 65 minutes, allowing one goal and making one save. Sophomore Andrew Engelmeyer closed out the last 25 minutes of the game and recorded one save. Fink earned the win and improves to 7-1-0 on the season.
CWRU outshot the Bulldogs 25-5 and held a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday, September 26th, as they host eighth-ranked Kenyon College on DiSanto Field for a 7:30 p.m. game time.
