Klemm’s ‘Golden Goal’ Gives Spartan Men 1-0 Win over #22 Capital

Case Western Reserve University sophomore midfielder Maximillian Klemm connected on a 'golden goal' in the first overtime period on Saturday evening to give the Spartan men a 1-0 win over 22nd-ranked Capital University.

The Spartans improve to 5-1-0 on the season, while Capital drops to 4-1-0 on the campaign.

The game was scoreless throughout regulation, before Klemm struck for the game-winning score, his second of the season, just 17 seconds into the first overtime period. The sophomore received a beautiful cross from junior forward Zachary Senft and drilled a shot into the back of the net.

The game-winning goal was the Spartans' third of the season, as they beat Geneva College 4-3 in double overtime on September 7th and John Carroll University 2-1 in the first overtime period on September 12th.

CWRU withstood the Capital attack throughout the game. The Spartans were led by the outstanding play of freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink who recorded four saves. CWRU outshot the Crusaders 17-8, and held the advantage in shots on goal (8-4) and corner kicks (7-6).

The four-game winning streak is the Spartans longest since a seven-game stretch from September 9 – October 3, 2015. In addition, the 5-1 record to begin the season is the best start for the Spartans through six games since the 2011 season when CWRU also began the campaign with a 5-1 record.

Case Western Reserve will look to keep their momentum going, as they prepare to host Heidelberg University for a mid-week matchup on Wednesday, September 19th. The match is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
