Men’s Soccer to Play John Carroll and #22 Capital

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will travel to University Heights, Ohio on Wednesday, September 12th to play 24th-ranked John Carroll University at 7:00 p.m., before returning home to welcome Capital University to DiSanto Field on Saturday, September 15th for a 5:00 p.m. match.

CWRU Spartans (3-1-0)

Junior midfielder Garrett Winter scored a pair of goals on Friday night, including the game winning 'golden goal' with 2:05 remaining in the second and final overtime period, to lead the Spartans to a 4-3 win over Geneva College. Junior forward Zachary Senft and sophomore forward Seldon Magruder each accounted for the other Spartan goals.

On Saturday night, Winter, sophomore defender Nathan Ekberg and Senft each struck for goals as the Spartans win in a 3-0 shutout against Oberlin College. CWRU struck for two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game and then sealed the victory with a goal in the 78th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink went the distance and made six saves. He improved to 3-1-0 on the campaign, while also notching his second shutout of the season.

John Carroll Blue Streaks (2-2-0)

The Blue Streaks went 1-1 this past weekend with a loss to Penn State Behrend and win against Medaille College. Against Penn State Behrend, John Carroll fell short against the Lions by a final score of 2-0 on Friday night.

On Sunday against Medaille, JCU scored first when Lawrence Cersosimo scored off of corner kick from Evan Malpass at the 33:26 mark. Medaille came back in the second half to score a goal in the 48th minute, but the Blue Streaks persistence payed off as Jared Mattei scored the game winning goal in the 86th minute via an assist from Chad Kanakkanatt.

#22 Capital Crusaders (3-0-0)

The Crusaders went 2-0 this past weekend with wins against Hanover College and Waynesburg University. Capital defeated Hanover 7-2 on Friday with goals from six different players, including a two-goal performance from Chewy Gordon. The Crusaders then made a quick turnaround and earned an 8-0 victory against Waynesburg on Saturday. Gordon and Luke Morais each registered a hat trick in the contest, as Capital has now started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2008.

Capital will play at Denison University Wednesday, before they travel to Cleveland to face the Spartans on Saturday evening.

Junior Garrett Winter ranks tied for first in the University Athletic Association with four goals and tied for second with eight points…Junior Zachary Senft ranks tied for third in the UAA with 15 shots, while freshman Charlie Fink ranks fourth in goals-against average (0.95)…The Spartans have totaled 68 shots and 37 shots on goal in its first four games of the 2018 season…CWRU has held opponents to averages of 3.5 shots on goal per game, and 7.25 shots per contest.
