The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will open its 2018 campaign with a home matchup against Marietta College on Friday, August 31st and then travel to Alliance, Ohio to take on the University of Mount Union on Sunday, September 2nd. The Spartans are scheduled to start Friday's match at 7:30 PM and Sunday's match at 12:00 PM.

The Spartans will open their 2018 season on Friday, following a 7-9-2 finish to the 2017 campaign. CWRU is slated to return 19 players from last year's team, including seven with significant starting experience.
The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Brandon Bianco who is starting his sixth season with the team. He has notched a career-record of 39-35-15 for a .527 winning percentage, while mentoring 21 players to All-UAA honors during his tenure as head coach of the team, including four during the 2017 campaign. Bianco is assisted by Chris Black and Charlie Reymann.
After an 11-6-3 record last season, Marietta will be opening its 2018 campaign against the Spartans on Friday. The Pioneers advanced to the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, before being knocked out by top-seeded Otterbein University.
Marietta is led by sixth-year head coach Joe Bergin. He is assisted by Ben Federici and George Threatt.
Last season, the Spartans defeated the Pioneers 2-1 in September 16. CWRU evened the game at 1-1 at the 12:33 mark, then scored the game-winning goal on a 74th-minute strike from senior Alex Besl.
Mount Union Purple Raiders
Mount Union finished the 2017 year with an 8-8-1 record, including a 4-4-1 mark in conference play, while scoring 1.18 goal-per game. The Purple Raiders are coached by Carter Poe, who is starting his fourth year with the team. He is assisted by Joe Chmura.
This is the fourth meeting between the two teams during the Brandon Bianco era of CWRU soccer. Last year, the Spartans defeated Mount Union 1-0, after former Spartan Michael Balog scored the game-winning goal just 49 seconds into the game.
The Spartans have won five of their last seven season-opening games, dating back to the 2011 season…Last season, CWRU defeated Mount Union 1-0 in their season-opener in Cleveland, Ohio…First-Team All-UAA senior defender Christian Lytle returns this season after aiding the team to four shutouts and also helped the defense hold opponents to 6.6 shots on goal per game…Senior forward Alex Besl and junior midfielder Zachary Senft return after earning All-UAA selections last season…Besl contributed a team-high five assists and scored four goals for 13 points last season, while Senft led the team with 15 points on six goals and three assists.
