CWRU Men’s Soccer to Play Ohio Wesleyan and Lycoming

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will travel to Delaware, Ohio on Wednesday, September 20th to play Ohio Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m., before returning home to welcome Lycoming College to DiSanto Field on Saturday, September 23rd for a 1:00 p.m. match.

CWRU Spartans (3-2-1)

The Spartans dropped a tough match against seventh-ranked John Carroll University, 1-0, on Wednesday night. CWRU fought hard all throughout the match. The Spartans took nine of their 13 shots in the first half and came close to scoring on several occasions. Senior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle wound up with six saves.

In Saturday's match against Marietta College, junior Alex Besl recorded his first multiple-goal game of his career to lead the Spartans to the 2-1 victory. Besl evened the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 12th minute and then delivered the game-winning goal in the 74th minute of play via an assist from freshman Maximillian Klemm. Besl led all Spartans in the contest with seven shots, including four on goal.

Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops (3-3-0)

The Battling Bishops posted a 1-1 record this past week as they defeated Ohio Northern 3-2, but fell to John Carroll 5-4 in double overtime. Against ONU, sophomore Ryan Roberts scored with 4:59 left in regulation time to break a 2-2 tie and lift OWU to the win. Freshman Matt Yingling also contributed a goal and assist in the Bishops win.

On Saturday against seventh-ranked John Carroll, junior Will Sharer, sophomore Joe Brush and sophomore Drew Riggle scored goals as Ohio Wesleyan wiped out a 3-1 second-half deficit to take the lead, but the Blue Streaks got the tying goal late in regulation time and scored the game-winner late in the second overtime period to take the non-conference win.

Lycoming Warriors (7-0-0)

The Warriors went 2-0 this past week with wins against Medaille College and the University of Scranton. Lycoming defeated Medaille 2-0 on Wednesday with first half goals by Keenthy Yeboah and Kyle Mizell. The Warriors then defeated Scranton 3-1 on Saturday. Sainclair Tueno led the way with two goals, his first coming in the 13th minute and second in the 80th minute of play.

Lycoming will play Frostburg State University on Wednesday, before they travel to Cleveland to face the Spartans on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Calvin Boyle ranks first in the University Athletic Association with 28 saves and fourth with a .848 save percentage…Junior Alex Besl ranks tied for fifth in the UAA with three goals and tied for fifth with 18 shots…The Spartans have totaled 111 shots and 44 shots on goal in its first six games of the 2017 season…CWRU has held opponents to averages of 5.67 shots on goal per game, and 10.83 shots per contest.
