Spartan Men’s Soccer Set to Host #2 Calvin and Brooklyn

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team is set to host second-ranked Calvin College on Friday, September 8th at 7:30 p.m. and Brooklyn College on Saturday, September 9th at 7:30 p.m. for a couple of non-conference matches at DiSanto Field.

CWRU Spartans (1-0-1)

The Spartans won their 2017 season-opener 1-0 on Friday against the University of Mount Union. The lone goal came quick and early for CWRU. In just 49 seconds into the game, senior forward Michael Balog received a pass from junior Alex Besl and sent one sailing into the back of the net which would hold for the remainder of the game.

CWRU battled to 0-0 tie in double overtime on the road versus DePauw University on Sunday. Senior Calvin Boyle made three saves in goal for Spartans. Balog and sophomore midfielder Zachary Senft each recorded a game-high six shots, while Besl and freshman Connor Weber each tallied three shots.

#2 Calvin Knights (2-0-0)

In their season and home opener on Friday, the Knights defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 2-1. Jacob Lyon scored go-ahead goal with just 8:55 left in regulation, but were stunned with an equalizer just over three minutes later. Bobby McCaw scored the game-winning goal with 9:919 left in the second overtime to lift the Knights to the win.

Calvin earned a 3-0 win over Lake Forest College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights took a 2-0 halftime lead using a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart. Calvin capped off the victory with a goal by Hunter Olsen with 3:12 left in regulation.

Brooklyn Bulldogs (1-0-1)

The Bulldogs played to a 0-0 tie on Friday against New York University. Brooklyn's goalkeeper Utku Tanritanir made nine saves, including a close one late.

In their game against St. Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals against the Golden Eagle to win 3-1. Jean-Luc Saint-Fleur tied the match in the 18th minute. Azizjon Ziyaev scored the game-winner in the 48th minute for his first collegiate goal and Ahmad Aly netted an insurance goal less than ten minutes after Ziyaev's. Brooklyn will travel to play Oberlin College on Friday, September 8th before they travel to DiSanto Field on Saturday to take on the Spartans.

Senior Calvin Boyle ranks tied for first in save percentage (1.000), goals against (0.00) and goals-against average (0.00) among all University Athletic Association players…Junior Alex Besl currently ranks tied for first in the UAA with one assist on the season…The Spartans have totaled 35 shots and 10 shots on goal in its first two games of the 2017 season…CWRU has held opponents to averages of 4.5 shots on goal per game, and 9.5 shots per contest.
