Spartans Drop Overtime Match at Emory

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a road match against the Emory University Eagles in double overtime, 2-1, on Friday evening.

The drop brings the Spartans to 4-7-2 overall this season and 0-2-1 in the UAA, while the Eagles improve to 8-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference.

Emory got on the board first when Moustafa Khattab scored via an assist from Jason McCartney in the 25th minute of play. The goal was Khattab's four on the season.

CWRU responded back in the 44th minute when senior midfielder Jacob Grindel headed in a cross from freshman midfielder Brian Woo. The goal was Grindel's second on the season.

The score remained 1-1 through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period. In the 102nd minute of play, Emory's Gabriel Vasconcelos scored the game-winner off an assist from Michael Carragher.

For the match, the Eagles led in shots (21-11) and corner kicks (6-5).

Junior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle made nine saves for the Spartans.

Case Western Reserve will continue its road-trip on Sunday afternoon when the Spartans play against the ninth-ranked University of Rochester at 1:30 p.m.
