UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Freshman forward Michael Balog (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) scored a pair of second-half goals, but the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team fell to local rival John Carroll University, 3-2, on Wednesday night at Don Shula Stadium.
Seventeen minutes after Balog's second score, Jimmy Mattina headed in the game-winning goal for the Blue Streaks at the 82:23 mark. The loss halts the Spartans' (4-2-1) win streak at four matches. John Carroll improves to 4-3-0.
JCU's Kevin Pachuta scored less than seven minutes into the match when he tucked a shot inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season. Midfielders Brian Potocnik and Jacob Lombardo were credited with assists on the tally.
The Blue Streaks struck again in the 18th minute as Potocnik cashed in following a cross by Pachuta. For the game, Potocnik was credited with four points on a goal and two assists.
After trailing at the half, Balog scored his third and fourth goals of the season in a span of 5:15 to knot the contest at 2-2. Sophomore forward Joshua Prosser (Springfield, Va./South County) earned his fourth point of the season with an assist on Balog's first marker at the 52:01 mark.
John Carroll goalkeeper Derek Jenkins made three saves to earn his first win of the season. CWRU freshman netminder Calvin Boyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made four saves in the loss.
For the match, CWRU outshot John Carroll, 16-15, while the Blue Streaks held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartans will return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20 with a road match against Ohio Northern University.
