
SALEM, Va. – The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team traded first half goals with Roanoke College as part of a 1-1 tie to open the 2014 season on Friday evening at Kerr Stadium.
The Spartans are right back in action tomorrow at the Roanoke Invitational against Lynchburg College at 5:00 p.m.
Junior forward Matthew Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley N.W.) scored his seventh career goal to open the scoring early on in the eighth minute. Twenty-five minutes of scoreless action ensued before the hosts tied the match on a Marc Dinkel free kick at 32:12.
The two teams then played a scoreless second half and two scoreless overtime periods to end the match in a draw.
CWRU outshot Roanoke 12-10 in regulation, but the Maroons attempted all seven shots during the overtime frames. The teams combined for 28 fouls, and CWRU held a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Frank Candau (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) was the goalkeeper of record for CWRU with a career-high six saves. Cole Sinclair stopped five shots for Roanoke.
