CLEVELAND – A goal in the 77th minute was the difference as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 18 nationally ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.) on Seniors' Night at DiSanto Field.
The Spartans end the season at 6-7-4 overall and 1-5-1 in the University Athletic Association under first-year Head Coach Brandon Bianco. The win clinched the UAA Championship and automatic berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament for the Yellowjackets (13-2-2, 5-1-1 UAA).
Prior to the match, Case Western Reserve honored its two men's soccer senior student-athletes, midfielders Marco Patrie (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster School) and Elshaday Belay (Houston, Texas/Bellaire).
Andrew Greenway provided the game winner at the 76:29 mark with a header that followed a long throw-in by Jarvis D'Souza. That goal came after a flurry of unsuccessful Yellowjacket scoring attempts over the course of the match.
The first significant threat came early in the 26th minute, but Spartan freshman goalkeeper Ari Lewis (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho) saved back-to-back tough shots to keep the match scoreless.
After Rochester grabbed its late lead, the Spartans had their best chance with just over two minutes remaining, but a shot by sophomore midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was punched away by a diving Mike Moranz out of the visitor goal.
For the match, Rochester led in shots, 20-6, while each team attempted four corner kicks. In between the pipes, Lewis (4-3-3) recorded four saves in the loss. Moranz's only save came on the late Cvecko shot.
