CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of the 2013 schedule with a 2-0 loss to Oberlin College on Tuesday night at Case Field.

The Spartans (5-3-3) have now dropped back-to-back matches for the first time this season, while the Yeomen (9-1-2), ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region, stretch their current unbeaten streak to eight.

Oberlin did all of its damage early in the first half then formed a tight seal around its own net to withstand a 13-7 shot differential in favor of the Spartans.

The first visitor goal came at the 16:28 mark when John Ingham headed a cross from Lois Naiman over the outstretched arms of Spartan freshman goalkeeper Ari Lewis (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho). Just over seven minutes later, the Yeomen added to their advantage as Joe Graybeal knocked in a header following a deep cross by Ari Schwartz at 23:55.

Case threatened the lead several times, but Oberlin and its goalkeeper Brandt Rentel turned away several good looks at the net. The Spartans' best shot came in the 78th minute when Rentel made a diving stop on a free kick by freshman midfielder Jacob Grindel (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University).

Lewis (4-1-3) played the opening first half and suffered his first loss of the season. Rentel finished with five stops for the Yeomen.

The Spartans (0-1 UAA) return to University Athletic Association play this Saturday, October 12 in an 11:00 a.m. match at New York University. Overall, the team plays its next three on the road in New York City, St. Louis and Chicago before returning home to close out the year with three straight at Case Field.
