ERIE, Pa. – Playing in his hometown, sophomore midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored his second goal of the season to lead the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College on Tuesday night at Behrend Field.
The Spartans remain unbeaten on the season with a record of 2-0-3 and will finally open the home portion of the schedule this Saturday, September 21 versus Franklin College (Ind.) at 3:00 p.m. at Case Field.
Ranked in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region, the Lions drop to 4-2-1.
The Spartans broke through in the 29th minute when Cvecko beat Behrend goalkeeper Jarrod Wassell to a loose ball at the top of the box that was deflected off of a shot by sophomore forward Logan Glosser (Toledo, Ohio, Ottawa Hills). Glosser's shot smacked the left post and ricocheted back to Cvecko who scored on a wide open net.
After being outshot, 6-4, in the first, the Lions came out aggressive in the second and totaled nine shots and five corner kicks. However, the Spartan defense led by freshman goalkeeper Ari Lewis (Jericho, N.Y., Jericho) was able to keep the Lions off of the score sheet.
In the 74th minute, Case got an insurance goal from sophomore defender Devon Belew (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) who scored his first career via an assist from freshman midfielder Jacob Grindel (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University).
For the match, Behrend led in shots (13-8), shots on goal (3-2) and corner kicks (6-3).
Lewis recorded three saves in net, while Wassell posted two for the hosts.
