GRANVILLE, Ohio - Sophomore midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored early in the first half to lead the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team in a season-opening 1-1 tie versus Sewanee University (Tenn.) on Friday evening at the Denison University Invitational. The match was the first for the program under first-year Head Coach Brandon Bianco.
The Spartans (0-0-1) will continue the weekend with another neutral site match versus Washington & Lee University (Va.) at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Generals also began their season with a tie (0-0) in the opening game of the Denison Invitational.
The Spartans wasted little time in getting the first goal of the season as Cvecko found the back of the net in the 11th minute with a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The goal was Cvecko's third career and second in as many career season openers.
However, Sewanee answered later in the half at the 28-minute mark when Ford Rushton headed a corner kick past Spartan starting goaltender Jay Darby (Flower Mound, Texas/Argyle).
Both sides pushed for a winning goal but despite 37 total shots, neither was able to break through.
Freshman goalie Ari Lewis (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho), who relieved Darby with two minutes to go in the first half, finished the game with four saves in his collegiate debut.
Freshman midfielder Jacob Grindel (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University) had a pair of shots in the final six minutes that were saved by Sewanee's Derek Williams.
Overall, the Spartans outshot the Tigers, 22-15, and held a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks.
