Spartan Men's Soccer Drops UAA Opener at NYU

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A goal in the 96th minute lifted the New York University men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory versus visiting Case Western Reserve University in the 2011 University Athletic Association opener on Saturday at Gaelic Park.

The Spartans fall to 7-3 overall and will return to action this Wednesday, October 5 at Hiram College at 7:30 p.m. NYU improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the UAA.

The first half was even at six shots apiece, while Case held a 4-2 advantage in the second. The Spartans' best scoring chance came when senior midfielder Kyle Alsup (Avon, Ohio/Detroit Country Day, Mich.) chipped a shot that was punched away by NYU goalkeeper Jonah Poster with 13:07 remaining in regulation.

The lone shot of overtime ended the match when Matt Newman scored via an assist from Niki Chow at the 95:04 mark.

Senior goalkeeper Ben Yabrow (Marietta, Ga./George Walton Comprehensive) recorded three saves and was saddled with the loss. Poster made five stops for the Violets.

For the game, Case outshot NYU, 10-9, while both teams attempted five corner kicks.

Following Wednesday's match at Hiram, the Spartans return to UAA action versus Brandeis University (Mass.) at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9.
