Case Western Reserve University first-year forward Cole Frilling (Coldwater, Ohio / Coldwater) was named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Rookie of the Year, becoming the first player in the program's history to earn the honor since the award was first issued in 2008.
The honor is the latest in a string of awards for Frilling, who was named to the All-UAA First Team and selected as the conference's Rookie of the Year earlier in the postseason. Frilling was the first CWRU freshman ever to be named to the All-UAA First Team, and the fourth player in CWRU history to be named the conference Rookie of the Year.
Frilling led all Spartan players in 2019-20 with 14.9 points per game (the fifth-highest mark in the UAA), while also pacing qualifying players on the team in shooting percentage (50.6%), three-point shooting percentage (42.9%) and free throw shooting percentage (86.2%). He added 6.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks per game during the campaign. Frilling started all 14 games for the Spartans in league play, pacing all UAA players with 17.9 points per game in conference contests. He was the first CWRU player since Matt Clark in 2015-16 to lead the league in points per game in conference contests.
Frilling scored in double figures in 18 of the team's 25 games, including six efforts or 20 or more points, and four games of at least 25 points. He registered a season-high 30-point showing during the team's 85-77 win over NYU on February 7. He was also selected as the UAA Athlete of the Week on January 13 after scoring 27 points in a win over Carnegie Mellon.
The Spartans finished the year with a 13-12 overall record, the team's first winning season since the 2014-15 campaign. Case Western Reserve went 6-8 in league play, matching the program record for most wins in a 14-game UAA season, and placed sixth in the final league standings.
