CWRU Men’s Basketball Named NABC Division III Team of the Week

CWRU basketball team huddle

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team was named the NCAA Division III Team of the Week by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, after claiming wins over the University of Rochester and eighth-ranked Emory University last weekend.

On Friday night, the Spartans overcame a 14-point first half deficit, and a five-point deficit in overtime, to defeat Rochester 88-87. On Sunday, CWRU picked up an 83-78 win over the Eagles, leading by as many as 17 points in the game. After taking a lead with 5:27 left in the first half, CWRU never fell behind again in the game.

It was just the second time in program history that the Spartans have swept a weekend against Emory and Rochester, and the first time since the 2009-10 campaign, the same season the current UAA travel partners were established.

Case Western Reserve finished the weekend shooting 46.3% overall and 41.3% from behind the three-point line. Senior guard Monty Khela led the team with 25.0 points per game, while first-year forward Cole Frilling added 24.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest, and sophomore guard Robert Faller added 15.0 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game.

The Spartans have now won five of their last seven games, including four-straight at home, and stand at 13-11 overall on the season. CWRU has clinched its first winning season under Head Coach Todd McGuinness, and its first above-.500 campaign overall since the 2014-15 campaign. The team is 6-7 overall in conference games, matching the most UAA wins in program history in a 14-game league schedule.

The Spartans will wrap-up their 2019-20 season on Saturday, February 29, when the team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face Carnegie Mellon University. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
