Frilling’s 25 Not Enough for Men’s Basketball in 78-65 Loss to Chicago

Cole Frilling backs down a defender during the Spartans' game against Chicago

Despite pulling within two points with just over three minutes to play, the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team lost to the University of Chicago 78-65 at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio. The Spartans fall to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the University Athletic Association, while the Maroons improve to 6-8 and 1-2 in conference play.

First-year forward Cole Frilling scored 25 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead all scorers. Junior guard Antonio Ionadi added 15 points and four rebounds with senior forward Michael Hollis leading the squad with five rebounds.

CWRU forced 14 Maroon turnovers in the contest, including eight steals, while only giving the ball away on nine possessions.

The Maroons used a 10-2 run to pull ahead 14-10 early in the first half, though neither team led by more than four points until seven minutes into the contest. Chicago then went on a 16-4 run to go up 30-16 with eight minutes to play in the half. To end the half, the Spartans decreased their deficit with a 9-0 run but still trailed 37-31 at halftime.

Chicago opened the second half on a 7-0 run to pull ahead by 13 in just three minutes. CWRU cut into the deficit, using a 7-1 run of their own to bring the score to 45-38. The teams traded baskets over the next eight possessions, with the Spartans pulling as close as six points on a traditional three-point play from sophomore guard Robert Faller. However, midway through the half, Chicago increased their advantage to 11, 57-46, as the Spartans shooting started to falter and the Maroons stayed hot.

CWRU kept the deficit at 10, holding the Maroons scoreless over a three-and-a-half minute period. Frilling drained a three-pointer with six minutes remaining in the game to bring the Spartans within seven, 59-52. After a Chicago basket, junior guard Michael Volkening made a three-pointer to cut the deficit back to six with four minutes to go. On the next possession, a Faller jumper put the score at 61-57. Frilling made two free throws to cap the 7-0 Spartan run and put CWRU down just two at 3:17.

However, Chicago responded with an 11-0 run to push ahead by 13 with under two minutes to go to put the game away.

Next weekend, the Spartans will embark on their first UAA road trip of the season, traveling to Rochester, New York to take on the University of Rochester on Friday, January 24. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Following the game, the team will head to Atlanta, Georgia to face Emory University on Sunday, January 26 at noon.
