Spartans Set to Face Thiel and Adrian This Week

Following a win at home last Tuesday over Denison University, the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team will face two more non-conference opponents this week.  On Wednesday, December 4, the Spartans travel to Greenville, Pennsylvania to take on Thiel College at 8 p.m. Then, on Saturday, December 7, CWRU hosts Adrian College in Cleveland, Ohio at noon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

CWRU SPARTANS
The Spartans broke a three-game losing streak with a 51-45 home victory over Denison University last Tuesday.  CWRU has a 3-3 overall record, including a perfect 3-0 record in home contests and a 0-3 record in road games.  Case Western Reserve averages 71.4 points per game, while allowing 74.3 points per game.  The team shoots 39.1% from the floor and 31.6% from three-point range, and allows opponents to make 43.1% of their shots and 34.3% of their three-point attempts.  Senior guard Monty Khela is the Spartans' leading scorer, averaging 10.7 points per game. The team's leading rebounder is senior forward Michael Hollis, collecting 6.3 rebounds per contest.  Hollis also leads the team in assists (2.3 per game) and steals (2.5 per game).

Coaching the Spartans is fourth-year Head Coach Todd McGuinness, who has compiled a 32-49 record at CWRU. Previously, McGuinness coached for seven years at Hartwick College and owns a 146-119 career record as a head coach. He is assisted by Mike Fitzpatrick, Greg Van Pelt, and T.J. Duckett.

THIEL TOMCATS
After dropping its first two games to begin the season, Thiel has won two of its last three, including a 69-53 home victory over St. Vincent College in its last game.  The Tomcats have a 2-2 overall record against Division III opponents, including a 1-1 record at home.  Thiel is averaging 71.2 points per game and is allowing 81.4 points per game.  The team shoots 38.6% from the field and 34.9% from three-point range, while allowing opponents to shoot 43.1% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range.  The Tomcats' leading scorer and rebounder is sophomore forward Ahmad Tejumola, averaging 13.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Senior guard Nyric Gosley leads Thiel with 3.0 assists per game.

Thiel is coached by Head Coach Tim Loomis, in his 14th season on the Tomcat sideline.  Loomis has been a head coach at all three NCAA divisions, with stops at Florida Atlantic University and California University of Pennsylvania, and led Thiel to their most wins in a single season (20) in the 2010-11 season.  His assistants are David Pastorkovich, John Reimold, and Frank Sineck.

CWRU will be playing Thiel for the third-straight year, and holds a 24-10 record all-time against Thiel, including wins in each of the last three meetings.  When the Spartans last faced the Tomcats last season, the team overcame an eight-point second half deficit to claim an 83-79 win at home.  Current junior guards Michael Volkening and Ignas Masiulionis combined for 22 points in the second half to spur the comeback.  Masiulionis finished the game with a team-high 16 points, and Hollis collected a team-high 10 rebounds.  Case Western Reserve shot well from the field against Thiel, making 52.6% of their attempts.

ADRIAN BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs sit at 3-4 this season with a 2-2 record on the road.  Adrian dropped its most recent contest to Ohio Wesleyan 85-81 in Delaware, Ohio.  The team averages 83.0 points per game on 48.6% shooting, while allowing 82.9 points per game on 47% shooting.  The Bulldogs make 38.7% of their shots from beyond the arc but allow opponents to make 41.1% of three-point attempts.  Leading the Bulldogs is junior guard Jordan Harris, averaging 24.7 points per game, one of the top marks in Division III.  Senior forward Jeremy Kalonji, who recorded a double-double in Adrian's last game, leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game and averages 20.4 points per contest.

Kyle Lindsay is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Adrian College men's basketball team.  A 2009 graduate of the school, Lindsay has a 33-50 career record as a collegiate head coach.  Lindsay's assistants are Aaron Tiknis, Scott McKelvey, and Jake Krzyzaniak.

The Spartans are 5-3 all-time against the Bulldogs.  Last season, Case Western Reserve prevailed 63-50 in Adrian, Michigan.  In the victory, Hollis collected a career-best 17 rebounds, and current junior guard Antonio Ionadi led the team with 19 points.

SPARTAN NOTES

  • The 45 points allowed by CWRU to Denison are the fewest allowed since Rochester (N.Y.) scored just 37 against the Spartans on January 25, 2015.
  • Following Saturday's game, CWRU will be off from competition for 11 days for finals, before returning to action at the 2019 Hoop MIA Holiday Slam in Miami, Florida on December 18th and 19th.
  • Four different Spartans—Ionadi, Khela, first-year forward Cole Frilling, and sophomore guard Robert Faller—have led the team in scoring in games this season.
  • Senior guard Sam Hansen has started in 53 consecutive games, dating back to the 2017-18 season, and has played in all 81 possible games in his career.
  • Junior guard Michael Volkening has started in 28 consecutive games, dating back to the start of the 2018-19 season.
  • In Case Western Reserve's first four games, four different players—Frilling, Khela, Hollis, and sophomore forward Ryan Newton—led the team in rebounds.
