CWRU Defeated by NYU on Friday Night

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered a 81-71 loss to New York University in New York, New York on Friday night.

Sophomore guard Ignas Masiulionis led all CWRU players in the game with 19 points, shooting seven-of-13 overall and four-of-nine from three-point range.  Freshman Ryan Newton added a six-of-nine shooting performance for 15 points, and secured seven rebounds in the game.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 43.5% overall, but just 30.4% (seven-of-23) from behind the three-point line.  CWRU started the game hot, hitting 48.1% of its shots in the opening 20 minutes and making four-of-nine three pointers.  Masiulionis paced the Spartans during the first half of play, making three threes in the period and scoring 11 points in the frame.  CWRU led by as many as 10 in the opening half, grabbing a 16-6 lead with 15:23 remaining on a layup by junior forward Michael Hollis.  However, the Violets would close the gap, and eventually grab the lead, 28-26, with 6:07 left in the half.  CWRU would not lead again in the game, and the Violets would build a 41-32 lead with a three-pointer as time expired in the first half.

CWRU kept the game close for most of the second half.  A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Michael Volkening with 4:13 to go cut the Violets' lead back to a point, 64-63.  The Spartans would not be able to get any closer though, and NYU increased its lead to double figures down the stretch of the game, securing the victory.

The loss was the fourth-straight for the Spartans, who fell to 9-12 overall on the season and to 2-8 in the UAA, while NYU improved to 7-14 overall and to 1-9 in the conference.

Dom Cristiano led the Violets with 19 points, and Bobby Hawkinson scored 14 points and 15 rebounds.

CWRU will wrap-up its 2018-19 road schedule on Sunday, February 10th, when the team travels to Waltham, Massachusetts to face Brandeis University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
