Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Antonio Ionadi was selected as the University Athletic Association Player of the Week for men's basketball after leading the Spartans to a pair of victories last week.
Ionadi capitalized on his first two starts of the season last week, leading the team in scoring in each game. In a team-high 32 minutes per contest, Ionadi registered 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game on 52.2% shooting overall (12-of-23) and 55.0% on three-point attempts (11-of-20), and was a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line. During Tuesday night's 63-50 win at Adrian, he led all scorers with 19 points (then a season-best) on five-of-11 shooting overall, including five-for-10 from three-point range, with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. He followed that with a career-high 24-point performance in the team's 80-57 win over Kalamazoo, shooting seven-for-12 overall, six-for-10 from long range (one three pointer shy of matching the program's single-game record), and four-for-four from the line, while collecting four rebounds and four assists.
For the season, Ionadi leads all CWRU players with 11.8 points per game, while shooting 45.6% overall and 45.8% on three-point tries. This was the first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of Ionadi's career.
The Spartans improved to 6-2 on the year with last week's victories. Case Western Reserve will be off from competition for finals this week, returning to action against Widener at the 2018 HOOP MIA Holiday Slam in Miami Shores, Florida on Wednesday, December 19th.
