Spartans’ Winning Streak Ends with 90-71 Loss at Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning come to an end with a 90-71 setback at the University of Rochester on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 1-1 in University Athletic Association play and to 7-6 overall, while Rochester raised its season ledger to 10-3 overall with a 1-1 league mark.

Both of the Spartans' leading scorers did all of their damage in the second half, with sophomore forward Connor Nally scoring 12 points on three-of-six shooting from long range, and freshman guard William FitzPatrick adding a career-high 11 points on a five-of-eight shooting effort over eight minutes of action.  Senior forward T.J. Duckett scored eight points and collected a team-high nine rebounds.

The Yellowjackets led throughout the entire first half, but the Spartans battled to keep it close throughout the opening 20 minutes.  After a dunk by Duckett with 16:26 to play made the score 9-7 Rochester, the Yellowjackets went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-7 lead.  However, a quick 9-2 CWRU run, keyed by five points from sophomore forward Michael Hollis, pulled the Spartans back within three, 19-16.  Rochester continued to lead, with back-to-back threes from freshman guard Antonio Ionadi cutting the advantage to two points, 26-24, with 6:22 to go.  However, the Yellowjackets closed the opening frame on a 17-5 run to take a 43-29 advantage into halftime.

Ionadi's nine points led the Spartans during the first half, with Hollis adding seven points and five rebounds.

Rochester built its lead to 23 with 13:12 left in the period, before a quick 5-0 run by CWRU cut it back to 18 points with 11:53 remaining.  However, a 14-4 run by the Yellowjackets extended their advantage to a game-high 28 points with 7:42 remaining, and CWRU would be unable to get the score closer than 19 points for the remainder of the game, despite the strong finish to the contest from Nally and FitzPatrick.

Case Western Reserve finished the game shooting 40.3% overall (25-of-62), including 33.3% (10-of-30) on three-point attempts.  The Spartans' bench outscored the Yellowjackets' 45-33 on Friday.

Ryan Clamage led Rochester with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists in the game.

The Spartans will look to bounce back on Sunday, January 14th, when the team concludes its road weekend in Atlanta, Georgia against Emory University at 12:00 p.m.
