The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team will host the annual Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, November 17th and Saturday, November 18th.

Tournament Awards
Following the completion of play on Saturday, an All-Tournament Team will be named, consisting of a member of each team, and a tournament Most Valuable Player.  In addition, there will be a plaque presentation for the winning team following the championship game on Saturday.

About Stephanie Tubbs Jones
Stephanie Tubbs Jones is one of the most distinguished and accomplished alumni of Case Western Reserve University, earning an undergraduate degree in Social Work from the Flora Stone Mather College in 1971. In 1974, she earned a Juris Doctor from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.  Tubbs Jones was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998, becoming the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in the U.S. Congress.  Read more…

CWRU Spartans
Case Western Reserve will be opening its 2017-18 season on Friday, following an 8-17 finish to the 2016-17 campaign, including a 3-9 home record.  The Spartans are slated to return seven players from last year's team, including senior co-captains and leading scorers T.J. Duckett (13.9 ppg and 9.3 rpg) and Colin Zucker (11.2 ppg).  The team with also feature a plethora of new faces, with nine freshmen and a pair of sophomores added to this year's roster.

Head Coach Todd McGuinness will be embarking on his second season with the squad.  He has a career record of 122-89 (.578 winning percentage), which includes a seven-year stint at Hartwick College, where his teams qualified for the NCAA Championships on four occasions.  McGuinness is assisted by Rudy Kirbus, Kelly Blair, Liz Hornberger, Evan Shang and Aleksandar Zivic.

The Spartans finished in second place at last year's Stephanie Tubbs Jones Tournament, with a win over Trinity University and a loss to Brockport State in the championship game.

Frostburg State Bobcats
Frostburg will be opening their season on Friday after going 7-18 during the 2016-17 year, including a 2-8 road record and a 0-3 mark in neutral site games.  The Bobcats are scheduled to return nine players who saw time on the court last season, including their leading scorer in senior Tyler Michael (16.5 ppg) and leading rebounding in junior Edwin Cole (9.9 ppg. 9.6 rpg).

The Bobats are under the leadership of Head Coach Webb Hatch, who has gone 207-264 during his 18 previous seasons at Frostburg State, and 314-413 overall during his 28 years as a collegiate head coach.  Hatch is assisted by Bradley Johnson and Tyler Campbell.

Friday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Montclair State Red Hawks
Montclair State will also open its 2017-18 season on Friday, after finishing last year with a 13-13 overall mark, including records of 5-6 on the road and 2-2 in neutral site contests.  Seven players who played for the team last year are scheduled to return, including senior guard Jovanni Chatham (8.1 ppg), senior forward Jarrett Bogus (7.8 ppg) and junior forward Jordan Roberson (6.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg).

Montclair State is coached by Marlon Sears, who has gone 24-27 during his first two seasons with the team.  He is assisted by Will Bishop, Nick Sires, Andrew Ling and Adam Greene.

The Spartans and the Red Hawks have played once before, with CWRU coming away with a 67-63 win over Montclair State during the 2009-10 season.

Greenville Panthers
Greenville opened its 2017-18 season on Wednesday with a 130-98 loss at Transylvania, following a 21-6 record (including marks of 9-3 on the road and 1-0 at neutral sites) in 2016-17.  The Panthers play a style of basketball known as 'The System,' which typically emphasizes a full-court press, three-point shooting and frequent substitutions, resulting in high scoring games.  The team's leading scorers from its first game were junior guard Rakim Murphy (17 points), junior guard Johari Dix (15 points) and senior forward Ethan Leib (12 points).

Greenville is coached by Dr. George Barber, who is beginning his 19th season with the Bobcats and has a career record of 234-226.  He is assisted by Stephen Groves, Kevin Cochrane and Andrew Scott.

Should they play on Saturday, it would be the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Panthers.
