CWRU Men’s Basketball to Wrap-Up Season with ‘Senior Day’ Matchup against CMU

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team will complete its 2016-17 season on Saturday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m., when the Spartans play host to Carnegie Mellon University at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.  Prior to the start of the game, the Spartans will honor their graduating player, Javier Alvarez, during a special 'Senior Day' ceremony.

Senior Day

The Spartans will be recognizing senior guard and team captain Javier Alvarez prior to the start of Saturday's game for his contributions during his time on the team.  Alvarez will enter Saturday's game third among CWRU players with 10.3 points per game this season, while leading the team with 48 steals (second in the UAA) and 111 assists (fourth in the UAA), the seventh-most assists in a single season in program history.

CWRU Spartans

The Spartans are coming off their biggest win of the season, a 76-72 win on the road on Sunday over Rochester, then ranked sixth in Division III.  CWRU is 8-16 overall, and tied for sixth in the conference with a 3-10 UAA record, while going 3-8 in home games.  The Spartans have scored 74.9 points per game this season and have allowed 80.0 points per contest, while ranking third in the UAA and 44th in Division III with 9.4 made three pointers per game.


The Spartans leading scorer this season is junior forward T.J. Duckett, who has paced the team with 13.9 points per game, a 57.5 shooting percentage, and 9.2 rebounds per contest.  Junior guard Colin Zucker has added 11.3 points per game, while senior guard Javier Alvarez is also averaging double figures with 10.3 points per game, in addition to a team-best 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals.  Freshman forward Connor Nally has scored 5.7 points per game and is third among UAA players with a 43.0% mark from three point range.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Todd McGuinness, who is in his first year at the program's helm after going 114-72 during his previous seven seasons as the Head Coach of Hartwick College.  McGuinness is assisted by Rudy Kirbus, Liz Hornberger, Kelly Blair and Eric Klinedinst.

CMU Tartans

Carnegie Mellon will enter their season finale on Saturday with a 13-11 overall record and a 4-7 road mark.  The Tartans dropped both games of their road trip last weekend, falling 82-67 at Rochester on Friday and 88-73 at Emory on Sunday.  The team has scored 73.9 points per game and allowed 72.0, while leading the conference in rebounds (41.71) and blocks (4.5) per game.

Senior forward Jack Serbin leads the Tartans with 17.3 points per game and a UAA-best 11.7 rebounds per contest, while senior center Chris Shkil has scored 13.3 points and added 7.7 rebounds and a UAA-leading 1.96 blocks per game.  Junior guard Ryan Maha has averaged 12.3 points per game during the year.

Now in his 29th season as a collegiate head coach, which includes a two-year stop at the University of the South, Tony Wingen has compiled a 324-398 overall record, including a mark of 304-370 during his 27 seasons at the Tartans' helm.  He is assisted by Jeff VanGorder.

Series History

The Spartans are 39-34 in the all-time series against Carnegie Mellon, including wins in five of the last seven matchups and two of the last three games played in Cleveland.  Earlier in the year, the Spartans dropped a 78-61 game to the Tartans in Pittsburgh, despite 15 points and seven rebounds from Connor Nally and 14 points and 10 rebounds from T.J. Duckett.  Carnegie Mellon's Jack Serbin led all players in the game with 23 points and 20 rebounds.  Last season, CWRU topped the Tartans 94-81 in the first meeting of the year behind 24 points from Javier Alvarez and 10 points and seven rebounds from Duckett.  The Spartans then completed the season sweep of Carnegie Mellon with a 93-87 win on the final day of the regular season, paced by 17 points from Colin Zucker, 14 points from David Black and 10 points and eight rebounds from Duckett.

Big Win for CWRU

The Spartans' win over the University of Rochester on Sunday was the team's first against a nationally-ranked opponent since an 89-78 win over Washington (Mo.), then ranked seventh in the country, on February 1, 2015.  Case Western Reserve also beat Rochester 57-51 when the Yellowjackets were ranked sixth on February 17, 2013.

Career Highs

Both Colin Zucker and Connor Nally recorded career-high point totals during the Spartans' win at Rochester on Sunday.  Zucker finished the game with 27 points, matching his career-high with six made three pointers, one shy of the program's single game record.  Nally scored the team's first 12 points on Sunday, connecting on four three point attempts in the first 3:08 of the game, and finished with a career-best 19 points and eight rebounds.

Three-Point Success

The Spartans have connected on 12 or more three point shots in four of their last five games, and five times overall this season.  The team's 225 made three point shots this season are the second-most ever by a CWRU squad, as is its 652 three-point shots attempted during the campaign.

Spartan Notes

CWRU scored 46 points in the first half of Friday night's game at Emory, matching their highest-scoring first half this season… The Spartans previously scored 46 points in the first half of their season-opening game against Baldwin Wallace… CWRU's highest scoring half of the season came in the second half of the team's road loss to Washington, when the squad totaled 60 points over the final 20 minutes… The Spartans have attempted eight or fewer free throws in each of their last three victories… T.J. Duckett recorded his team-leading 10th double-double of the season during the Spartans' overtime loss at Emory last Friday… It marked the third time this season that he has recorded a double-double coming off the bench in a game, and his sixth double-double in a UAA game… Duckett is third among UAA players in double-doubles this season… He leads the UAA and is 35th in Division III with 3.54 offensive rebounds per game, while his 221 rebounds are the fourth-most in a season by a Spartan… Colin Zucker has made 59 three point shots this season, tied for the sixth-most in the program's history in a season, and his career 39.7% shooting from long range is the fourth-highest ever recorded by a Spartan… Connor Nally's 43.0% shooting from behind the three point line is the 15th-best percentage in a single season in program history.
