Case Western Reserve University freshman Sam Hansen scored a career-high 17 points in the first start of his career, and junior forward T.J. Duckett added his third double-double of the year, but it was not enough for the Spartans, who dropped a 72-64 decision on the road to Adrian College on Saturday.
Hansen went six-for-eight from the field and connected on five of seven three point tries for the first double-figure scoring game of his collegiate career, after entering the contest with just 13 total points over his first four games. Duckett added 10 points and 12 rebounds on the day for his third double-double effort through five games this year. Junior guard Colin Zucker led all Spartans with five assists and scored nine points on Saturday.
The Spartans jumped out to an early seven-point lead on Saturday, taking a 12-5 advantage over the Bulldogs on a three pointer by Hansen with 16:08 remaining in the first. Adrian battled back to take the lead, 18-17, on an and-one by DaVonte Harris with 12:19 on the clock, and took a three-point lead with 10:03 remaining on a pair of free throws by Justin Webster. The teams continued to go back and forth for the remainder of the period, before a three pointer and a pair of free throws by junior forward Eric Black helped the team take a 34-29 lead heading into the halftime break.
Duckett hit a layup to open the second half, as the Spartans matched their largest lead of the game, but the advantage quickly eroded, as a 13-0 run by the Bulldogs gave Adrian a 42-36 lead with 14:39 remaining in the game. The Spartans fired back, pulling within one after a three-pointer by senior guard Javier Alvarez and a pair of free throws by Duckett. After a layup by Adrian, back-to-back threes by Hansen and junior forward David Black gave CWRU the lead back, 47-44, with 10:37 to play.
However, Adrian would regain the lead with 8:36 remaining on a three by Harris, and would never trail again in the game. The Spartans would pull back within one point on two occasions – once on a three by Hansen with 6:48 left and again after Hansen knocked down another three pointer and Zucker followed with a pair of free throws with 4:23 remaining that made the score 57-56 – but Adrian would ultimate build a 10-point lead in the closing seconds, before ultimately winning the game by eight.
Case Western Reserve matched their season high with 10 three pointers in the game, and shot a season-best 43.5% from beyond the arc on Saturday. In addition, the Spartans' 17 assists in the game marked a season-high as well.
Harris led all Adrian players in the game with 31 points on Saturday on a 12-for-20 shooting performance from the field.
The Spartans fell to 1-4 on the year with the loss, while Adrian improved to 3-3.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action next weekend for the Doc Greene Tournament, hosted by Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. The Spartans will open tournament play against Lynchburg College at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9th.
