The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team fell to Denison University in its first road game of the season, dropping an 85-75 decision to the Big Red in Granville, Ohio on Tuesday night.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 1-3 on the year, while Denison remained undefeated for the campaign with a 3-0 record.
Freshman Daniel Chambers came off the bench to score 19 points to lead all Spartan players on Tuesday, finishing the game six-for-13 from the floor and converting on all six of his free throw attempts. Senior guard Javier Alvarez scored a season-high 18 points, connecting on eight-of-17 shots, and adding a game-high three steals. Junior forward T.J. Duckett finished a rebound shy of his third double-double of the year with 13 points and nine boards, while junior forward David Black contributed with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Spartans trailed for most of the first half in the game, before closing out the period on an 8-0 run to propel past the Big Red. The run was started by a jump shot in the paint by Chambers that cut the Denison lead to 41-38, and then the Spartans went on to make six of seven free throws in the final 1:16 of the half to take their first lead of the game. The half was capped off when junior guard Colin Zucker was fouled on a three-point attempt, and converted all three of his free throws to give CWRU a 44-41 lead by the break.
Chambers and Alvarez combined for 25 of the Spartans' 44 points in the first half, as the team shot 53.6% from the field, and made 12-of-13 free throw attempts.
The Big Red quickly regained the lead in the second half, but Case Western Reserve remained within two points, until a three-pointer by David Meurer have Denison a 61-57 lead with 9:13 remaining. The Spartans would not get any closer the rest of the game, as Denison would expand its advantage to as many as 11 points late in the contest.
Jett Speelman led the Big Red with 23 points and seven rebounds, and Meurer added 15 points in Tuesday's game for Denison.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Saturday, December 3rd, when the Spartans travel to Adrian, Michigan for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Adrian College Bulldogs.
