The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team will host the annual Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, November 18th and Saturday, November 19th.

Tournament Awards
Following the completion of play on Saturday, an All-Tournament Team will be named, consisting of a member of each team, and a tournament Most Valuable Player.  In addition, there will be a plaque presentation for the winning team following the championship game on Saturday.

About Stephanie Tubbs Jones

Stephanie Tubbs Jones is one of the most distinguished and accomplished alumni of Case Western Reserve University, earning an undergraduate degree in Social Work from the Flora Stone Mather College in 1971. In 1974, she earned a Juris Doctor from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.  Tubbs Jones was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998, becoming the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in the U.S. Congress.  Read more…

CWRU Spartans
Case Western Reserve will look to get in the win column this season, after falling to Baldwin Wallace 90-76 in their season-opener at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Tuesday.  Junior T.J. Duckett led all players in the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds, connecting on eight-of-12 shots from the field and recording the first double-double of his career.  Other Spartans scoring in double figures in the game included junior forward David Black (16 points), senior guard Javier Alvarez (14 points) and junior forward Eric Black (11 points), as the team finished the game shooting 48.4% (31-for-64) from the field.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Todd McGuinness, who is in his first year with the Spartans after going 114-72 during his previous seven season as the Head Coach of Hartwick.  McGuinness is assisted by Rudy Kirbus, Liz Hornberger, Kelly Blair and Eric Klinedinst.

Trinity Tigers
Trinity, which went 10-16 last season, opened the 2016-17 campaign on Tuesday with a 75-56 win at the University of Texas – Dallas.  The Tigers were led by freshman forward Danny Rivara, who finished the game with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Matt Jones added 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and senior forward A.J. Pulliam contributed 11 points and five rebounds.  The Tigers shot 44.8% (30-of-67) from the field in the game.

Trinity is coached by Pat Cunningham, who is beginning his 30th season as a head coach, the last 18 of which have been spent with Trinity.  He holds a record of 309-161 with the Tigers, and is 460-327 overall for his career.  Cunningham is assisted by Ross Burt, David Smith and Jacob Citron.

Friday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Tigers.

Brockport State Golden Eagles
Brockport will be opening its season on Friday night, following a 17-10 campaign in 2015-16 that included records of 9-2 on the road and 3-3 in neutral-site games.  The team is slated to return nine players from last year's squad, including its top-three scorers in senior forward Clifton Lyerly (16.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.3 apg), junior guard Hamed Shamseldin (14.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg) and senior guard Devonn Gavin (11.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg).  The Golden Eagles averaged 79.1 points per game on 45.7% shooting from the field and 33.6% from long range last year.

Brockport is coached by Greg Dunne, who is entering his 10th season with the Golden Eagles and has a career record of 152-99.  He is assisted by Joe Clarke, Seth Johnston and Ricky Hollis.

The Spartans and the Golden Eagles have never played prior to this weekend.

Hampden-Sydney Tigers
After going 17-10 last season, the Tigers began their 2016-17 campaign on Tuesday with a 70-63 road win at Averett University.  Junior forward Nick Chase led the team in the game with 20 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Jake Duncan added 15 points and seven rebounds Hampden-Sydney shot 43.9% from the field and 43.8% from long range in the game.

Hampden-Sydney is coached by Dee Vick, who is starting his ninth season with the Tigers, and has a career record of 136-84.  He is assisted by Tyler Sanborn, Kevin Leatherwood, Daniel Eacho and Matt Irving.

Should they meet during the tournament, it would be the first-ever encounter between Case Western Reserve and Hampden-Sydney.

Spartan Notes
Last season, the Spartans finished second at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Tournament, topping Goucher 79-58, before falling to tournament-champion Brooklyn 92-79 in the title game… Former Spartan Jimmy Holman was named to the All-Tournament Team… The Spartans last won the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Tournament in 2014, when former Spartan Dane McLoughlin was named the tournament MVP, and Eric Black earned All-Tournament honors… Case Western Reserve junior T.J. Duckett recorded career highs in both points (21) and rebounds (13) during the team's season-opening game against Baldwin Wallace… Duckett's previous career-best marks were 10 points and 11 rebounds… Over his last five games, dating back to last season, Duckett has averaged 9.6 points and 10 rebounds… Junior forward Eric Black in nine points away from 500 for his career…  He added two blocks to his career total as well on Tuesday, and his 44 career blocks are tied for 14th in school history… Junior forward David Black blocked a shot on Tuesday, moving into a tie for 20th in school history with 35 career blocks… 50 of the Spartans 76 points against Baldwin Wallace were scored in the paint… Case Western Reserve shot 57.6% (19-for-33) from the field in the first half, including 64.0% (16-of-25) from inside the three-point arc… For the game, the team shot 60.0% from inside the three-point arc (27-of-45)… Four CWRU players came off the bench to make their collegiate debuts on Tuesday – freshmen Nick Aloi, Daniel Chambers, Sam Hansen and Connor Nally.
