Spartan Men’s Basketball to Host Baldwin Wallace in Season Opener

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team will host crosstown opponent Baldwin Wallace University at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15th, and the Spartans will open their 2016-17 season at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans are coming off a 12-13 campaign in 2015-16, including a 5-9 University Athletic Association record and a 6-7 mark in home games.  CWRU led the UAA and was 25th in Division III in scoring with 86.4 points per game last season, while shooting 44.0% from the field and 37.1% from long range.  The Spartans are returning three double-figure scorers from last season, including junior guard and co-captain Colin Zucker (10.8 ppg), senior guard and co-captain Javier Alvarez (10.8 ppg) and junior forward David Black (10.6 ppg), while junior forward Eric Black added 9.6 points per game and 6.2 rebounds, and junior forward T.J. Duckett contributed 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Todd McGuinness, who is in his first year with the Spartans after going 114-72 during his previous seven season as the Head Coach of Hartwick.  McGuinness is assisted by Rudy Kirbus, Liz Hornberger, Kelly Blair and Eric Klinedinst.

Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets finished the 2015-16 season with a 16-11 overall record, including a mark of 9-4 on the road.  Baldwin Wallace shot 44.9% from the field, and 39.1% from three-point range, while averaging 81.4 points per game and allowing 80.2.  The team will be returning its top three scorers from last year, including junior guard Cam Kuhn (21.5 ppg, 4.1 rebounds), junior forward Jake Fetherolf (11.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg) and sophomore guard Jay Battle (9.4 ppg, 4.1 apg).

The Yellow Jackets are coached by Tom Heil, who is in his second year with the squad, and has a career record of 38-18, which includes a one-year stint at Defiance College.  Heil is assisted by Brian Schmidt, Keonta Howell and Sam Amico.

Matchup History
The Spartans have won the last two games against Baldwin Wallace, picking up an 88-83 win over the Yellow Jackets in Berea last year, and an 82-73 win at home in 2014.  In last year's game, Eric Black scored a season-high 18 points for the Spartans and Colin Zucker added 10 off the bench to help lead the team to a win.  The Spartans are 4-14 all-time against Baldwin Wallace.
