The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team finished its weekend road trip with an 89-72 loss at the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon.
Chicago improved to 16-6 on the year with a 7-4 record in University Athletic Association games. The loss was the third-straight for Case Western Reserve, which dropped to 3-8 in the conference and to 10-12 overall.
CWRU senior Jimmy Holman started the day strong, hitting four of six shots and connecting on three of four three point attempts in the first half, scoring 13 of his Spartan-best 18 points in the first 20 minutes of action. Holman tied the game at 6-6 with a pair of free throws at the 16:04 mark, before a 7-0 Chicago run over the next three and a half minutes boosted the Maroons' advantage to 14-6. Chicago continued to expand its lead, going up by 14, 34-20, with 7:01 to play in the half, before a three-pointer by junior Javier Alvarez, followed by three made free throws from Alvarez and a layup by senior Spencer Boyd helped to cut the home team's advantage to 36-28 by the 5:58 mark. However, a 9-0 run by Chicago pushed its lead to a first-half high 17 points, 45-28, with 3:06 remaining in the period. Later threes from sophomore Colin Zucker and Holman, and a layup with 10 seconds left from Alvarez trimmed the Maroons' edge to 14, 50-36, heading into halftime.
An early surge in the second half saw the Spartans cut the Chicago lead down to nine, after a jumper by Holman made the score 56-47 at the 15:58 mark. But, the Maroons would cement their lead from there, going on a 16-0 run over the next five minutes and 10 seconds of the game. Chicago's advantage continued to balloon to a game-high 28, 77-49, before a three-pointer from senior Matt Clark ended a stretch of 6:30 without a field goal for the Spartans.
A late 12-0 run by Case Western Reserve, including three pointers from freshman Michael White and sophomore Steve Sangree, pulled the game back within 15 in the closing minute, before a layup by Chicago's Justin Jackson with 17 seconds remaining produced the final score of 89-72.
In addition to Holman's 18 points, Clark added 11 and collected six rebounds. Chicago's Jordan Smith led all scorers with 22 points, with Jake Fenlon adding 15 off the bench.
The Spartans will return to Cleveland for their final two home games of the season next weekend. Case Western Reserve will begin the weekend on Friday, February 19th against the University of Rochester at 8:00 p.m. Prior to the start of Friday's game, the Spartans will honor the team's three graduating senior players – Jimmy Holman, Matt Clark and Spencer Boyd – with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony.
