The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team wrapped up a four game road trip with a 100-82 loss to 22nd-ranked New York University in a University Athletic Association matchup at the Coles Center in New York, New York on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans now stand at 9-9 on the season with a 2-5 conference record, while NYU improved to 14-3 with a 4-3 UAA mark following the win.
Case Western Reserve senior Matt Clark led the Spartans with 19 points, while collecting five rebounds and four assists. Senior Jimmy Holman added 12 points, with sophomore Eric Black scoring 10. Senior Spencer Boyd had a team-best eight rebounds.
The game stayed within three points with six lead changes through the first five and a half minutes, before an 8-0 Spartan run put CWRU on top by seven, 21-14, with 11:51 remaining in the first. A 17-5 spur over the next four and a half minutes would give NYU a 31-26 lead with 7:16 remaining. The Spartans remained close, with Clark tying the game at 35-35 with a shot from beyond the arc with 4:37 remaining, for three of his team-high nine points during the first 20 minutes. However, the Violets responded with seven unanswered points and scored 11 of the final 16 points to close the half with a 46-40 advantage.
NYU quickly pushed its lead back to seven within the first minute of the second half, but back-to-back three pointers from sophomore Colin Zucker and Clark brought the Spartans back within one, 49-48, with 18:28 to play. From there, an 11-2 run by the Violets pushed their advantage to double-digits, 60-50, with 15:05 to play. The Violets would lead by as many as 25, jumping out to a 93-68 advantage with 4:59 remaining in the game, en route to the win.
NYU's Evan Kupferberg led all player with 25 points, while Ross Udine (14 points, 10 assists) and Patrick Burns (18 points, 10 rebounds) each tallied double-doubles on Sunday.
The Spartans will return home for Throwback Weekend next week, when the team hosts Brandeis University on Friday, February 5th and New York University on Sunday, February 7th. The games will be played at historic Adelbert Gymnasium, and the team will wear uniforms from the Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University, to honor the rich history of both institutions. Tip off against Brandeis is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Friday night.
