CWRU Men’s Basketball Opens Season with 79-58 Win over Goucher

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team opened its 2015-16 campaign with a win on Friday night, defeating the Goucher College Gophers 79-58 during the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament, presented by the Intercontinental Hotel and Conference Center, at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the win, CWRU advanced to the championship game of the tournament, where they will take on Brooklyn College.  Brooklyn defeated the Rochester Institute of Technology 91-68 earlier in the day to reach the tournament's title game.  Goucher will face RIT in the consolation game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Sophomore forward David Black led a well-rounded scoring effort from the Spartans with 13 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Jimmy Holman added 12 points.  Junior guard Javier Alvarez and sophomore forward T.J. Duckett each scored 10 points to round out the team's double-digit scorers.

On the boards, sophomore forward Eric Black added seven rebounds to his eight points, and sophomore guard Colin Zucker collected seven points and seven rebounds.

The Spartans never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 14-7 lead on a layup by Duckett with 14:03 left in the first half.  After the Gophers scored five straight to cut the CWRU lead to two with 11:22 to play in the half, CWRU went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to go on top 25-12.

CWRU continued to build its lead in the first half, ending the first 20 minutes with an 18-point advantage, 40-22.  Holman and Clark paced the Spartans with seven points each during the first half.

The Spartans would see their lead balloon to 25 on a David Black three-pointer with 9:51 to play in the game, and reach as high as 26 points on a Zucker layup with 2:32 left in the contest.

CWRU finished the game shooting 46.0% from the field.

Mychal Stefanides led all Goucher players in the game with 11 points, as the Spartans' defense held the Gophers to 32.3% shooting on the day.

The Spartans will take on the Bulldogs for the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Tournament title at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
