CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) recorded his fifth double-double in a row as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team defeated Bethany College (W. Va.) in overtime, 76-71, in the consolation game of the 2013 Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament on Monday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
Thompson was one of four Spartans (6-2) to reach double-digit scoring as he tied a career high with 22 points to go along with a career-best 16 rebounds and five blocked shots. For his efforts, the fourth-year Spartan was named to the all-tournament team with two-game averages of 21 points, 13.5 rebounds and four blocks.
All-tournament selection Delonte' Joyce led the Bison (9-2) with game highs of 30 points and 10 steals.
The Spartans stormed out of the gate with a 14-0 run as Thompson accounted for the final points with a layup at 15:36. Bethany finally got on the board with a Kevin Jackson layup at 14:37 and eventually pulled to within 16-12 after a Joyce bucket with 11:19 on the clock. The Spartans were able to stabilize from there, but the Bison trimmed three more off of their deficit (33-32) by halftime.
In the second period, Bethany turned up its defensive pressure and grabbed its first lead as part of a 10-3 run that made the score 42-36 as Joyce hit a transition layup. Undaunted, the Spartans rallied and went ahead thanks to a 9-0 run that ended in a layup by junior forward Brian Klements (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South) with 11:45 left in regulation. Bethany stayed close, however, and regained the lead at 59-57 when Joyce scored on a layup to cap an 8-0 run at 3:21. Two ties followed, and the Spartans had a look at the bucket in the final seconds, but the game went to overtime tied at 61.
In the extra frame, the Spartans broke a 63-63 tie with five points in a row as junior guard Julien Person (Houston, Texas/Second Baptist) hit the key shot with a triple off of a kick-out pass by Thompson with 2:58 left to play. Bethany came right back with a 6-0 spurt of its own to lead 69-68, but sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) hit a jumper at 1:09 then two free throws at 00:53 after a quick steal by senior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos). An empty possession followed for the visitors, and Case put the game away with free throws from Person and Holman in the final 26 seconds.
Chung (15 points and seven rebounds) along with Holman (15 points and five assists) joined Thompson in double figures for the Spartans. Person just missed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
Bethany did score 26 points off of 24 Spartan turnovers, but the hosts led in rebounding, 45-37.
The Spartans return to action this weekend at the Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament hosted by Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. The Spartans play Johns Hopkins University (Md.) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3 to open the two-day tourney.
