CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University men’s and women’s track & field will host rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the annual Battle for the Obelisk this Saturday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Veale Center.

“For our student-athletes, this is no doubt one of the highlights of the season,” said third-year Head Coach Eric Schmuhl. “Dual meets, especially those against a rival school, add a different level of excitement to the competition. Our young men and women are focused on bringing the Obelisk back to our building.”

The Obelisk Trophy is awarded to the winning school in what has become an annual dual meet between the two programs started by former CWRU Head Coach Steve Rubin. The team with the best men’s and women’s combined score takes home the Obelisk.

Last season, Carnegie Mellon scored a combined 139 points (82 men/57 women) to capture the Obelisk for the second straight season. The last CWRU victory in the overall dual meet series came on February 4, 2012 by a score of 153-101.

The Spartans will look to carry over the momentum from last Friday’s performance at Baldwin Wallace University’s Mid-January Meet. The women placed first with individual first-place finishes from senior Rachel Tan (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) in the high jump, junior captain Taylor O’Neil (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) in the 800-meter run and junior Asante Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) in the triple jump. The Spartans’ 4x400m relay team also placed first.

Tan accomplished a rare feat by clearing her head height in the high jump with a career-best mark of 1.62m (5’3.75”). She also set a career best in the 55m hurdles (8.89 seconds).

On the men’s side, the Spartans finished in second place behind an individual title from junior Devon Belew (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) in the 400m dash. Belew also ran for the winning 4x400m relay.
