CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University men’s and women’s track & field will host rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the annual Battle for the Obelisk this Saturday, February 2 at 12:00 p.m. at the Veale Center.

The Obelisk Trophy is awarded to the winning school in what has become an annual dual meet between the two programs started by former CWRU Head Coach Steve Rubin. The team with the best men’s and women’s combined score takes home the Obelisk.

As part of this season's event, the 300 Club will be on hand promoting school spirit with free candy and games.

Last year, the Spartans took home the trophy with a combined score of 153-101 as the women won their dual 95-32, and the men were beat 69-58. In 2010, the Tartans edged the Spartans by one point, 127-126, as the women won their meet 79-47, but the men were defeated 80-47.

Both the Spartan men and women opened the season last Saturday with team titles and multiple facility records at the Defiance Invitational.

The Spartan men broke two George M. Smart Center records, one by senior distance specialist Phil Yeung (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) with a mile time of 4:30.59 and one by the distance medley relay team of freshman Ben Brucker (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), senior Michael Perisa (Cortland, Ohio/Warren JFK), senior Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and junior Dishen Lin (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) with a time of 11:00.28.

The Spartan women accounted for three facility records, including one by junior sprinter Gavriella Pora (Nampa, Idaho/Liberty Charter) in the 200-meter dash (26.85). Junior jumper Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, Pa./North Schuykill) won her signature event, the triple jump, and broke the facility record during prelims with a mark of 10.67m. The third record was achieved by freshman distance runner Kelsey Aamoth (Solon, Ohio/Solon) with a time of 10:50.06 in the 3,000m run.

Two returning Spartan men posted strong showings in last year’s Battle for the Obelisk. Junior Andrew Barnhart (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) was a double-winner in the long jump (21 feet, 11 and one-half inches) and triple jump competitions (42' 6"), while junior Nick Errico (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) claimed the pole vault title (13' 5.25").

On the women’s side, sophomore Keri Walter (Cairo, Egypt/Cairo American) won the triple jump (35' 5.75") and sophomore Kristen Ruckstuhl (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) paced the field in the 5,000m run (18:13.78).
