Smith & Saxton Each Garner Multiple Weekly Honors

Case Western Reserve University junior linebacker Joshua Smith was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and received University Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week honors, while sophomore quarterback Drew Saxton was named both the UAA and Presidents' Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

The duo helped the 23rd/19th-ranked Spartans claim a 35-19 win over Washington and Jefferson College during Homecoming at DiSanto Field on Saturday, keeping the team in the lead for the race for the PAC title.

Smith finished the game with eight total tackles (five solo), including a career-high four tackles for a loss and three sacks.  All four of his tackles for a loss, including the three sacks, came on third-down plays to end Washington and Jefferson drives.  The CWRU defense allowed just 43 rushing yards in the game.

Smith has now registered multiple sacks in three-straight games to increase his season-total to 7.5 sacks, and leads all NCAA Division III players with 1.88 sacks per game.  He has totaled 22 tackles (14 solo) with 10.5 tackles for a loss, one pass breakup, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

Smith is the third Spartan linebacker ever to earn a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week, joining former Spartans Jeff Brown (2008 week three) and Everett Dishong (2014 week one).  He is the third Spartan this year to be named to the weekly team, joining senior defensive linemen Andrew Lease (October 1) and Cameron Brown (October 8).  This was Smith's first UAA Athlete of the Week honor.

Saxton threw for four touchdowns in the game, completing 21-of-29 passes (72.4%) for 309 yards and did not throw an interception in the contest.  His four touchdown passes came to four different receivers, including a 46-yard pass to freshman Michael Wojkowski with 1:18 left in the opening quarter to give CWRU a 14-7 lead, a 21-yard pass to junior Colt Morgan with 6:57 remaining in the first half to put the Spartans ahead 21-7, a season-long 60-yard pass to junior Chase Witte on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend the Spartans' lead to 28-7, and a 29-yard pass to senior Mario Robaina to push CWRU's lead to 35-7 with 9:06 remaining in the game.  The 300-yard passing game was Saxton's second of the season and the eighth of his career through 15 contests.

Saxton has completed 63.6% of his passes this season for 1,301 yards and 12 touchdowns with just three interceptions.  With the win, Case Western Reserve remained in first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 4-0 league record, and improved to 5-0 overall.

Saxton has now been named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week three times over his career, while securing UAA Athlete of the Week honors on five occasions.E
